Summary

  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth saw efficient development in three years thanks to team retention, and Kitase said there could be an improved release timeline for Part 3.
  • The Ultimania compilation gives insights into the development of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, providing clarity for fans and some ambiguity for Part 3.
  • Nomura confirms completion of the main story for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Part 3, with voice recording possibly starting soon.

Following the release of the Ultimania compilation for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, game producer Yoshinori Kitase stated that the development of the highly anticipated third entry in the series could lead to a shorter release window. Kitase said that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was developed in three years following Final Fantasy 7 Remake's Intermission DLC thanks to the retention of team members, which led to an efficient development period that he hopes to continue into Part 3.

As one of the top-rated video game releases of 2024 at the time of writing, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is Square Enix's latest single-player entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga. From the grasslands of Kalm to the unforgettable moments in the Forgotten Capital, the events of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth encompass the bulk of the original game's first disc. Over a month after its release, Square Enix released the Ultimania compilation book for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which provided some insights from the development team and gave some clarity to questions players asked following the game's story while retaining some ambiguity for fans to stew over until Part 3's release.

The Ultimania compilation for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth remains exclusive to Japan, but brief translations have started to make the rounds on social media. Via translations of the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Ultimania posted by Aitai Japan CEO Audrey Lamsam, Kitase said that he hoped not to sacrifice quality for the sake of time, and hoped to continue the efficient production schedule that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth had. However, Kitase noted that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was launched four years after FF7 Remake because one of those years was dedicated to the latter's Intermission DLC. Assuming Part 3 of Final Fantasy 7 Remake releases three years after Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, it would be out in 2027 and coincide with the 30th anniversary of the original Final Fantasy 7.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Could Release in Less Than Four Years

Although Square Enix previously stated that there are no plans for implementing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth DLC, this could be a silver lining for fans. Creative director Tetsuya Nomura said that the main story script for Part 3 was completed, and that voice recordings could begin imminently. Nomura also remarked on some ideas proposed for Part 3 of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga by Kitase but did not elaborate further.

Though the game has no plans for DLC, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth continues to receive updates to fix some lingering issues. Only time will tell when the anticipated third chapter of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga will see the light of day.
