Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be released for the Nintendo Switch 2 in early 2026, and while this is exciting news for many fans, the title will reportedly be on a Game-Key card that will take up a hefty chunk of the console's storage capacity. Initially released in 2020, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is making its way to more and more platforms, giving even more players a chance to experience the recent reimagining of the 1997 RPG classic.
Wowing audiences on the PlayStation 4 upon release with its stunning graphics, orchestral soundtrack, and faithful interpretation of the original title, an enhanced version of the first part of the popular trilogy appeared on PlayStation 5 and PC the year after. This month, series director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that the entire Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is coming to the Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S on January 22, 2026, following countless rumors about the potential ports being in development. While Switch 2 players are eager to get their hands on the first part of Cloud Strife's adventure, some new details have come to light that have many users frustrated.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s Switch 2 Port Will Be On a 90GB Game-Key Card
As spotted by Eurogamer, images of Final Fantasy 7 Remake's Switch 2 game box found on the official Square Enix store confirm that the title will be a Game-Key Card release. While this may be somewhat expected, the game's eShop listing has some bad news, stating that Remake will require a 90GB download, or about one-third of the Switch 2's total storage capacity. Months after the console's release, Game-Key Cards continue to be a hot topic in the gaming community, with many players concerned about what they might mean for game preservation down the line.
In August, Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Remake's Switch 2 port would run at 30 FPS, which disappointed many fans eager to get their hands on the upcoming port. Much of this frustration stemmed from the fact that the recently released console can run Cyberpunk 2077 at 40 FPS, despite the CD Projekt Red game being much more graphically intensive due to its vast open world. It's unclear whether a patch will be released after Remake's release to improve the game's frame rate.
Those wanting to pick up Final Fantasy 7 Remake for the story will have some new gameplay options to choose from when the RPG drops for Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S. Square Enix recently announced the new optional Streamlined Progression feature, which will allow players to never take damage, always deal 9,999 damage, and more.
