A new Magic: The Gathering card featuring Sephiroth has sparked speculation regarding the villain’s potential appearance in Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, and Creative Director Tetsuya Nomura recently addressed the question. The Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy started in 2020, with the sequel released in 2024, and fans are eager to discover more about the third and final installment of the saga. Unfortunately, not much information is available just yet.

Last week, Hasbro unveiled more details about the new Magic: The Gathering crossover with Final Fantasy, which includes cards featuring tons of memorable characters from the long-running franchise. One of the most noteworthy cards of the new collaboration was Sephiroth’s, as the villain comes in two versions, and curiously, one of them has a distinct design that had not yet been seen in games. While the “Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER” card looks like what fans would expect, the “Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel” card depicts what seems to be a new form for Safer Sephiroth, the original game’s final boss.
How Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Rebirth Reinforce Tifa's Strength as a Character
Tifa's birthday of May 3 just passed, so it's a great time to celebrate her legacy, with compassion furthering her strength in FF7 Remake and Rebirth.
Now, Final Fantasy Remake’s creative director, Tetsuya Nomura, addressed the new design (via VGC), which he illustrated himself. "There is also a reason that the design for Safer Sephiroth is different from the original game, but I unfortunately can’t share more about that,” he said. While the answer is cryptic, it could indicate that it’s related to the upcoming third part of the trilogy. Some fans are speculating that this could be Sephiroth’s new form, with many pointing out that it’s similar to the design that the popular Final Fantasy villain had in Dissidia Final Fantasy, but with a few distinct changes.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Director Can't Share Why Sephiroth Looks Different in New Magic Card
There is also a reason that the design for Safer Sephiroth is different from the original game, but I unfortunately can’t share more about that.
Not much is currently known about Final Fantasy Remake Part 3, including the game’s official name. Reports from earlier this year indicate that Final Fantasy Remake Part 3 is progressing well, but the title is still not expected to be released before 2027. As the team has remained largely unchanged since Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the turnaround time has been positively affected, and many assets from previous titles may also help ease development.
Fortunately, the developers have recently confirmed that Final Fantasy Remake Part 3 will be released on the PS5, despite it also likely being available for next-gen consoles. There’s also been speculation that the entire trilogy could be released on Xbox and the upcoming Switch 2, with the latter already confirming that the first game will be available on Nintendo's newest hardware. In any case, gamers will have to wait some time before Square Enix releases more details about the eagerly awaited title.
