Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave was officially announced at the September 2025 Nintendo Direct, and it will be coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026. Fans have been anticipating a new entry in the Fire Emblem franchise for years now, and while this one will introduce an entirely new story, it features the surprising return of a major character from Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

The Fire Emblem tactical RPG franchise has been around since 1990, though it didn't gain a big following in the west until the days of the Nintendo GameCube, when Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance was released in 2005. Modern games in the Fire Emblem franchise still feature a similar format to early entries, with grid-based battles playing out over a series of rounds, the possibility of permanent death of most characters a looming threat.

New Fire Emblem Game Features a Surprising Character Return

The announcement of Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave fills a void left on the Nintendo Switch 2, as many fans had expressed hope that a new game would be available at the console's launch in June. Instead, it's coming sometime in 2026 as a Switch 2 exclusive. And while 2019's Fire Emblem: Three Houses provided some great characters like Claude, Edelgard, and Dimitri, spread across three opposing factions, the return of Sothis at the end of the announcement trailer may be the biggest surprise of all. Though appearing as a child in main character Byleth's mind, Sothis is an elder being able to control time. The new trailer's shocking ending shows Sothis sitting on a familiar throne amid a sea of darkness, though she has grown into an adult form and asks the viewer, "Have you forgotten me so soon?"

The new trailer shows Fortune's Weave will feature The Heroic Games, an arena-based event that looks to draw in several colorful characters. These include a spear-wielding boy named Cai riding an ostrich-like creature, a noble named Thoedora who values strength above all, and a dark-armored myrmidon named Dietrich, who is able to teleport using dark-looking magic. Along with its turn-based combat, the video also shows players will be able to participate in the free-roaming feature introduced in Three Houses between battles.

Sothis in Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave

While it will feature an original tale, Sothis' return in the upcoming game could provide answers to questions that Fire Emblem: Three Houses' story left behind. That game's lore is hidden behind four separate paths, in addition to an add-on DLC story featuring the Ashen Wolves, but some players left it still wondering about the links between Crests and the Demonic Beasts, as well as why green-haired members of the Church of Seiros are able to transform themselves into dragons. Sothis' return also leaves Byleth's fate in question, as both the main character and Sothis fuse midway through the game, resulting in them no longer being able to speak to one another.
