The announcement of five new Sonic the Hedgehog LEGO sets may have just leaked online, and it may be in line with planned Sonic-related content that's coming in 2023. LEGO has been known to release collaborations with other famous brands and titles such as Star Wars, Mario Bros., Indiana Jones, and Jurassic Park just to name a few.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a well-known character who also serves as the mascot to SEGA, similar to what Mario represents for Nintendo. In fact, both mascots are renowned for being the top platform game characters for their respective brands. Currently, Sonic remains a fixture in the videogame market with SEGA releasing Sonic Frontiers earlier this year and being deemed a financial success.
As such, it's probably not surprising to hear the news that five new Sonic the Hedgehog LEGO sets are inbound, especially with the franchise finding a renewed life over the past year, spawning the Netflix show Sonic Prime, as well as new video games, and the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie among others. Promobricks, a LEGO blog known to report news and leaks surrounding LEGO sets, has shared that five different sets will be available over the course of next year.
These Sonic the Hedgehog LEGO sets will have varying price points between $29.99 and $99.99. While no further information is known regarding the content and release date of the aforementioned sets, the expectation is that they will be available by LEGO's Summer 2023 release, roughly around August of that year.
Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka recently stated that "We already announced additional content for Sonic Frontiers, but there is a lot more outside of that, so please look forward to it." It seems that SEGA could be trying to keep the momentum going for the blue blur, especially with how favorable this past year was for the Sonic brand. With merchandise such as the recently released Sonic the Hedgehog Squishmallows also dropping soon, as well as an early announcement of the Sonic Frontiers DLC Roadmap for 2023, Sonic may be pushing out more brand-related releases soon.
Also, this isn't Sonic the Hedgehog's first exposure to LEGO. Fans may be quick to remember that Sonic the Hedgehog first appeared in LEGO form in the videogame LEGO Dimensions. That game saw physical LEGO figures placed onto a physical portal where they would then be usable in-game. Earlier this year, fans also had our taste of the very first Sonic the Hedgehog LEGO sets which released on January 1, 2022.
Nevertheless, these new sets are a welcome addition to Sonic's legacy and will surely be well-sought after collectibles for fans and non-fans alike. Perhaps this will eventually open up a new doorway for a LEGO Sonic The Hedgehog videogame, but for now, fans should stay glued to the most recent game release as Sonic Frontiers has multiple DLC incoming in 2023.
Sonic Frontiers is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
