Five Nights at Freddy's: Into the Pit is a new 2D survival horror title from developer Mega Cat Studios, which adapts the first story from the FNAF: Fazbear Frights novels. The title marks the first time that the narrative of one of FNAF’s books has been transformed for the screen, delivering a thrilling 2D horror experience that ranks as one of the franchise’s absolute best. Fazbear Frights’ short stories are among the darkest tales in the FNAF Universe, with a few perfectly suited for adaptation to the screen. After the success of FNAF Into the Pit, Another Fazbear Fright story deserves the spin-off treatment.
Five Nights at Freddy's: Into the Pit tells the story of a 10-year-old boy, Oswald, whose innocent prank opens the door to a supernatural nightmare. Written as both an original story and an accessible introduction to FNAF for readers, the story sees Oswald explore the original Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza in 1985, before Spring Bonnie follows him home back to the present. Animatronics following characters home from Freddy’s is a recurring trend in the Fazbear Frights series, with various stories adapting characters, objects, and locations from the games. One such story, which adapted FNAF 4’s Plushtrap, offers a compelling case for game adaptation, as its core gameplay mechanics could build on those of Into the Pit, albeit with a twist.

FNAF’s Out of Stock Story Deserves a Game Adaptation
Five Nights at Freddy’s: Fazbear Frights’ second volume, Fetch, featured three new stories set within FNAF’s universe. While its title story is rumored to be the next adapted to gaming, its third entry, Out of Stock, has all the makings of a great survival horror title. The title features a small animatronic, the Plushtrap Chaser, at its center, which adapts the titular animatronic from FNAF 4’ s Fun with Plushtrap minigame. Like its gaming counterpart, the Plushtrap Chaser can only move in complete darkness, freezing in place when confronted with a light source. While the original mini-game sees players attempt to stop the animatronic in a designated spot, Out of Stock sees the concept expanded into a night-long nightmare for three young friends.
Out of Stock follows a boy named Oscar who desperately wants a Plushtrap Chaser of his own. When Oscar and his friends, Raj and Isaac, reach the front of the line at the Emporium, where Plushtrap is on sale, they learn it is sold out, before Oscar overhears chatter about a strange, lifelike defect. After asking to purchase the defect, and being refused, Oscar steals the strange animatronic, which appears to have human eyes and real teeth.
Days later, the boys are at Oscar's when a storm strikes the area. As Oscar plugs the Plushtrap Chaser in to charge, lightning strikes the house, knocking out the power and plunging the boys into darkness. With only a few semi-functional flashlights at their disposal, the boys find themselves hunted by Plushtrap, who rapidly maneuvers the house, chews through doors, and mimics their voices. To survive the night, the boys must work together to escape the darkness and destroy the Chaser, or the lights may go out for good.
FNAF: Out of Stock Could Be Adapted to a Variety of Gaming Subgenres
Whether adapted to 2D or 3D, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Out of Stock’s narrative could make for a thrilling single-player experience. However, the story’s 1v3 third act offers a compelling case for a focused multiplayer title. FNAF: Out of Stock’s game adaptation could see three players working together to escape Oscar’s house while pursued by the Plushtrap Chaser, before making their way to the outside world. FNAF: Into the Pit offered a variety of endings, based on player actions. Out of Stock could do the same, expanding the limitations of the original story, and offering fans various ways to achieve their goals. What’s more, this format opens the door to additional modes and options that could improve replayability and increase the challenge post-completion.
Five Nights at Freddy's: Out of Stock's game adaptation could also feature an asymmetrical multiplayer mode, pitting a Plushtrap player against 3 survivors. However, this premise would likely not prove successful as the title's sole offering. Out of Stock is just one of the many Five Nights at Freddy's stories that could be adapted to video games, with the Silver Eyes Trilogy, Fazbear Frights, and Tales of Pizzaplex each offering compelling tales of animatronic horror. Following Five Nights at Freddy's: Into the Pit' s massive success, it's likely a matter of time before fans see more of the franchise's novel canon hit the screen.
