  • Vermeij considers Niko Bellic the best protagonist in the GTA series and would love to see the game updated for current-gen consoles.

Following the exciting rumors about a potential Grand Theft Auto 4 remaster, former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij expressed his enthusiasm about the idea. Rockstar Games hasn’t said anything regarding a Grand Theft Auto 4 remaster, but the community has been buzzing since the rumors surfaced, with players holding their breath to see Niko Bellic’s return to action.

GTA 4 is regarded by many as the best entry in the hugely popular action-adventure open-world crime franchise. While titles like Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA 5 are also deeply cherished by the community, Niko Bellic’s journey struck a chord with players, setting a higher bar for narrative depth and paving the way for other games. The story, set in a fictional New York City, follows Niko as he tries to achieve the “American dream,” in a tale packed with twists and turns. Although players' attention has been focused on the upcoming GTA 6, a recent rumor about a GTA 4 remaster has now hooked the community—and now a former dev has spoken on the matter.

Former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij, who worked at the studio from 1995 to 2009, was recently asked on social media about the rumors of a potential Grand Theft Auto 4 remaster. Vermeij—who hadn’t heard the rumors at the time—showed enthusiasm about the idea, saying he believes the game’s story is worth a remaster, especially considering that “there have been a number of successful remasters recently.”

Former Rockstar Technical Director Thinks GTA 4 Should Be Remastered

Vermeij was also asked by a fan how he feels about the idea of seeing the game brought to current-gen consoles, and he responded that it’s something he would like. Like many fans, Vermeij thinks that Niko Bellic is the best protagonist in any GTA game. The rumors came from a credible GTA insider, Tez2, who claimed that the game has been in development for a year and could possibly be released later in 2025.

Rockstar has a complicated history with remastering the franchise, especially after the GTA Trilogy launched with massive technical issues, leaving players frustrated upon release; however, with the GTA 6 delay, a remaster of Niko Bellic’s story could be a fun way to kill time while waiting for the new release, which is now expected in 2026. Nevertheless, the studio hasn’t provided an official confirmation of a GTA 4 remaster, and despite the community’s enthusiasm, players will have to wait to see whether this is real or just speculation.
