Summary

- Ghost of Yotei is the spiritual successor to Ghost of Tsushima, set 300 years later, focusing on revenge.
- Rumors suggest Ghost of Yotei might launch in summer 2025, aligning with its predecessor's release date.
Former PlayStation and Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida recalls his time with an early-in-development version of Ghost of Yotei, calling it intuitive and delivering a bug-free experience. The upcoming Sucker Punch title is still fairly mysterious, as fans continue to wait for the next big piece of news for Ghost of Yotei.
After Ghost of Yotei was officially announced last year during a PlayStation State of Play event, news has been hard to come by for the upcoming spiritual successor to Ghost of Tsushima. Taking place 300 years after the events of Jin Sakai and his story in Ghost of Tsushima, Yotei presents players with a new protagonist who is apparently out on a mission of revenge, hunting down individuals who were responsible for her family's death. Even with an unrevealed launch date, Ghost of Yotei appears to be shaping up to be another amazing experience, at least according to one former Sony executive.
Ghost of Yotei's Revenge Story Needs to Be Bigger Than Atsu
Ghost of Yotei may begin as a personal tale of revenge, but Atsu’s journey could turn into a deeper fight shaped by Japan’s shifting power struggles.
On a recent Easy Allies podcast, Shuhei Yoshida discussed Sony's upcoming exclusive Ghost of Yotei. Yoshida praised developers like Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch for managing to make their games feel good, to a point where playing the game through the controller just feels natural and intuitive. However, Yoshida had more to say specifically about how improved Ghost of Yotei appears to be over its predecessor.
Yoshida Offers High Praise to Ghost of Yotei
One aspect that seemed to stand out to Yoshida during his time playing Ghost of Yotei is how Sucker Punch was able to deliver a playable and bug-free experience, even at a very early stage of development. Even after changing the battle system many times at that point, Yoshida seemed to marvel that "somehow, the game doesn't crash" and "it always works." Yoshida also revealed that he got to play alot of Atsu's journey in Ghost of Yotei before he ultimately left Sony, as the producer wanted his feedback everytime he was visiting Sucker Punch.
"Every time I visit [Sucker Punch], even though I left the first party – the producer of the game brought me into his room and let me try Ghost of Yotei in development, and he wanted my feedback. It always felt great. So I'm looking forward to this game."
While the assumption remains that Sucker Punch's upcoming open world title will be a 2025 release, the studio has yet to provide any clarity on when fans can expect to see the game. Rumors and potential leaks have indicated that Ghost of Yotei will launch this summer, specifically in July or August. The timeframe lines up with its predecessor, as Ghost of Tsushima originally launched on the PlayStation 4 in July 2020, so another summer launch for the sequel makes sense. Either way, fans likely won't have to wait too long for official news if that is indeed the targeted launch date.
