After Fortnite closed Chapter 3 with a live event finale that seemed to underwhelm some players, it’s a good time to look back at all the times Fortnite excelled in its practice of live events. Live events are grandiose events that occur for every lobby in the game at the same time and usually, connect to the overarching storyline of Fortnite’s narrative.
Live events in Fortnite have been a part of the game since Chapter 1, Season 3, and have been going strong ever since, and only gotten bigger as each Season progresses. The best Fortnite live events are the ones that include the player and make them part of the narrative, rather than restricting them to a fetch quest or cutscene.
10 The Butterfly, Chapter 1 Season 6
The major event in Fortnite Chapter 1 Season 6 saw a goodbye to the Cube, as its energy was leaked into the whirlpool of Loot Lake. The final purple tear drained the Cube of energy, and it turned gray, exploding into a blinding white light. All players in the game would then be transported to the In-Between.
The event ended after a giant butterfly shrank to land on the player’s finger. When players are transported out of the In-Between and return to Loot Lake, they find that it has been forever changed. This drastic alteration of an iconic location was just the beginning.
9 Kevin The Cube Is Born, Chapter 1 Season 5
During the middle of Chapter 1, Season 5, the Cube Event happened live in the middle of the season. This began with a surge of purple lightning that shot down from the Rift in the sky. After a few seconds, a mysterious giant purple cube appeared at Paradise Palms.
This Cube was dubbed by the community as “Kevin,” and has become a beloved character in the Fortnite lore. Kevin journeyed through the Chapter 1 map before dissolving into Loot Lake, creating a season-long Live Event. It was a lot of fun, as Kevin could squish players that get in his path, or bounce them off him.
8 The Final Showdown, Chapter 1 Season 9
Chapter 1 Season 9’s best event occurred during the season, and not as the final major event for Season 9. Season 9 teased a massive showdown between a giant monster and a giant mech suit for a while, with players even receiving the ‘Monster Team’ and ‘Mech Team’ banners and signs to show their support for their chosen side in the hulking match. It wasn’t long before the Monster and the Mecha had their showdown of epic proportions.
Players would watch helplessly as these two titans battle across the entire Fortnite Chapter 1 map, destroying things in their path of war. The Mecha even absorbed power from the Zero Point, causing irreversible damage to the stability of the map and the lore in Fortnite. It was an event of epic proportions.
7 The Device, Chapter 2 Season 2
The Doomsday Device was greatly teased in the spy season of Fortnite. Thanks to Midas and his plans, the Doomsday Device harvests energy and pushes back the storm. This attack against the storm had unforeseen consequences, as players would be transported to an office, where they would hear for the first time the voice of John Jones, whom players knew as Jonesy.
The end of the event saw the map absolved by water, a true water wasteland for the beginning of Chapter 2 Season 3. Not only were the map alterations drastic, but the fact that Jonesy now had a voice opened up a Fortnite storyline that would only enrich the gaming experience.
6 The Unvaulting, Chapter 1 Season 8
There was something truly unique about The Unvaulting, the live event for Fortnite Chapter 1 Season 8. This event saw the vault inside Loot Lake open, where players were sucked into the most sacred place of Fortnite: The Vault. This location harbors all vaulted items and weapons, and players were given a unique responsibility.
Players could vote on what to bring back: The Bouncers, Drum Gun, Grappler, Infinity Blade, Planes, or Tactical SMG. The Drum Gun was chosen by the player base. After returning to the Fortnite map, the volcano erupts, destroying locations, including Tilted Towers, making this an immensely altering event.
5 The End, Chapter 1 Season 10
There was no secret about The End event. Fortnite had told players for weeks, even months, that this is indeed The End. This would be the goodbye to Fortnite, a finale to what was a grand game. The event saw all players in the map group up to watch as the Zero Point destabilizes, and then, the map that they knew and loved is destroyed.
The only thing that remained in Fortnite for players was a black screen, with a black hole in the center. This is one of the first times that a game has shut down, pretending to close the curtains forever, before coming back for a brand-new map in Fortnite Chapter 2.
4 Collision, Chapter 3 Season 2
Dr. Sloan and IO had been a great threat in Fortnite since Chapter 2. With the Chapter 3 Season 2 live event, Fortnite sought to end IO with one grand war. Players got to control the Mech, with each player in the squad taking a limb to fight against the IO.
Players’ final showdown sees them invading the Collider, in which they get to see a quick tease for next season as they watch Darth Vader fight none other than Obi-Wan Kenobi. This event saw the end of the IO storyline, as the game moved onto a new threat, whilst keeping players in the focus of the action.
3 The Devourer Of Worlds, Chapter 2 Season 4
For the first time in Fortnite history, they dedicated an entire season to a collaboration. The map and the skins of the Battlepass were all Marvel-related, featuring grand characters like Iron Man, Thor, Wolverine, and She-Hulk. The season saw the ominous threat, the Devourer of Worlds, Galactus approaching the Fortnite island to consume the Zero Point.
As the Chapter 2 Season 4 event began, players would team with Marvel’s best heroes, the Avengers, to ensure Galactus couldn’t devour the Zero Point. What makes this event even better is not only flying the battle bus in a Star Wars-like trench sequence, but the fact that this is all canon to Marvel Comics.
2 Operation Skyfire, Chapter 2 Season 7
There’s something so exciting about being involved in an alien invasion blockbuster. Operation Skyfire was great fun and combined all players of the map into an event in which they embark to save the Fortnite Chapter 2 island. Players team up with the character Dr. Slone, and they take the fight to the invader with an invented backbling.
Not only do players run through exploding corridors in a thrilling conclusion to Chapter 2 Season 7, but they come across none other than a giant Cube, reminiscent of Kevin. Players team up to reboot the cube. Later, cubes and debris rain from the sky, devastating the Chapter 2 Season 7 map.
1 The End, Chapter 2 Season 8
With The End vastly approaching, the Chapter 2 Season 8 event saw the end of the Chapter 2 map, and the beginning of Chapter 3. This grand event saw the Loopers team up to fight the Cube Queen and her invading forces. Outgunned and overwhelmed, it seemed that all was lost for the Fortnite players.
The End is a grand event in Fortnite, one which reveals Dwayne Johnson as an important character called the Foundation. The event ended with the island flipping, revealing that the Chapter 3 map was right under their feet the entire time.
Fortnite is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
