Over the last seven years, Fortnite has quickly cemented itself as a hub for all things pop-culture, with its Battle Royale, Festival, and LEGO modes all boasting countless cosmetics based on a wide variety of popular franchises and IP. From movies to TV shows to anime to musical artists, Fortnite has been home to hundreds of crossovers, and Disney and Marvel have been some of the game's biggest supporters.
Long before Billie Eilish, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the Master Chief appeared in Fortnite, Marvel's Thanos was at the heart of the game's very first major crossover event, opening the floodgates for every collaboration that's come since. And Marvel's presence in Fortnite has only continued to grow stronger over the years. Right alongside Marvel, other Disney-owned franchises like Star Wars have also continued to make appearances in Fortnite. And following the recent D23 Fortnite panel, it seems as though Disney's collaborations with Epic Games' Battle Royale are far from over.
Fortnite: Who is Gwenpool?
The recent addition of Gwenpool to Fortnite has generated excitement, but it has also left some players wondering who the superhero actually is.
Fortnite Is Doubling Down on Disney and Marvel
Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 4 Revolves Around Marvel
Back in August 2020, Fortnite hosted a whole season dedicated to the Marvel universe. This season brought a Battle Pass that included iconic Marvel characters like Wolverine, Iron Man, Groot, Storm, and Doctor Doom. Four years later, Fortnite has just dropped another Marvel season, and Doctor Doom has returned to take center stage. Named "Absolute Doom," Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 4 sees players battle against Doom, Mysterio, and Emma Frost, all of whom appear in the Battle Pass alongside a bevy of other popular Marvel characters, including:
- Gwenpool
- Gwendolyn Poole
- Dark Gwenpool
- War Machine
- Iron Patriot
- Peelverine
- X-Force Peelverine
- Classic Peelverine
- Emma Frost
- Organic Diamond Emma Frost
- Black Queen Emma Frost
- Captain Jones
- Stealth Captain Jones
- Mysterio
- Supernatural Mysterio
- Illusory Mysterio
- Shuri
- Shuri's Black Panther
- Doom (Available From September 5)
Every skin in Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 4's Battle Pass is Marvel-themed. Some of these skins are direct translations of Marvel heroes and villains from the comics, such as Mysterio, Shuri, War Machine, and Gwenpool, and some are Marvel-themed versions of original Fortnite characters, such as the several Peelverine and Captain Jones skins, who reference Wolverine and Captain America respectively. Fortnite's ongoing Battle Pass also has plenty of other Marvel-themed cosmetics, ranging from loading screens to pickaxes to Back Blings.
On September 5, players will be able to unlock a new tier of the Battle Pass specifically focused on Doctor Doom. This Doom-centered Battle Pass will consist of two tiers, though fans aren't sure what cosmetics will be included aside from the new Doom of Latveria skin.
Disney Villains and Pixar Heroes Are Set to Hit Fortnite in Fall
During Disney's recent D23 Expo, it was also confirmed that a handful of classic Disney villains will be making their way to Fortnite in the Fall. It's been heavily rumored that these Disney villains will be part of Fortnite's upcoming Fortnitemares Halloween event. These skins include:
- Cruella de Vil
- Captain Hook
- Maleficent
Also announced during D23, a handful of Pixar characters are set to hit Fortnite. The first three Pixar characters coming to Fortnite will be from The Incredibles:
- Mr. Incredible
- Elastigirl
- Frozone
Fans Can Expect to See Plenty More Disney and Marvel in Fortnite's Future
Back in February of this year, Disney announced that it was acquiring a $1.5 billion equity stake in Fortnite's developer, Epic Games. At the time, Disney explained its investment as a way to create a new "entertainment universe" that combined its IP with Fortnite and Unreal Engine. It seems as though fans are already starting to see the beginnings of this new gaming universe, with Disney set to have a strong presence in Fortnite for the rest of the year. And fans can probably expect to see plenty more where that came from.
