Fortnite's newest creation is the Fortnite Festival, and it guarantees an experience unlike anything else in the game. Arguably the most unexpected among the recent new additions, Fortnite Festival replaces the run-and-gun action of Battle Royale with a rhythm game set on stage. The radical change in gameplay doesn't make Fortnite Festival a simple gimmick, though. Like all of Fortnite's recent additions, it can prove quite addicting once a player finds their groove with it. It does require a much different approach than Fortnite's more famous offerings, but players can have plenty of fun in Fortnite Festival.
While not a celebration in the same vein as Fortnite's annual Winterfest event, Fortnite Festival has plenty of reasons for fans to get excited. Fortnite Festival is a non-competitive mode where players can choose from a list of popular and original tracks to play. Each track has four options for players to take on:
- Vocals
- Lead
- Bass
- Drums
Players can take the stage alone with randomly chosen NPC bandmates, or team up with some friends to play a set. Neither option will have much impact on the player's own performance, but bringing some friends along for the ride helps Fortnite Festival feel like a real party.

Because Fortnite Festival has been confirmed as a permanent new addition to Fortnite, its mechanics are thankfully sound. Anyone who has played Guitar Hero or Rock Band should be familiar with the formula. The goal is to keep the rhythm and play the notes as they come by on the tracker, with the score multiplier increasing for sufficiently long combos. The real trick for high scores comes with launching Overdrive at the right time, doubling the multiplier as long as it's active. However, missing a single note will drop the multiplier back to one, so players need to be consistent to earn five-star ratings for their performances.

The song list is comprised of a rotating list of popular tracks, unsurprising considering Fortnite's history of musical collaborations, as well as the player's own Jam Tracks. The track list includes a lot of familiar songs, like Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" and "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers. There are two main methods to earn new Jam Tracks. First is by buying them in the shop for 500 V-Bucks a pop, to ensure that they'll always be available. The second method is through the new Festival Pass, which includes exclusive unlockable tracks, with PSY's "Gangnam Style" being a particularly notable addition to aim for.
Get Creative with Fortnite Festival's Jam Stage
There's more to do in Fortnite Festival than playing the main stage. Players can take their owned Jam Tracks in Fortnite to the Jam Stage and play them in a casual environment. While players don't need to perform like on the Main Stage, the main appeal of Jam Stage is mixing and matching with other players. Up to four players can share a stage, each playing a single part of a chosen song. Everyone can team up to play the same song, or make a remix by piecing different songs together. They can also change the tempo and key for more music-altering fun.
Fortnite Festival takes an entirely different route compared to the game's other modes, but it plays an important role in making 2023 Fortnite's biggest year ever. It brought a deluge of new songs to the game, many of which are remarkably popular. It's an old school style of rhythm game that adds some well-appreciated variety to that Fortnite has to offer, and has a lot of potential to grow exponentially in the future. Fortnite Festival may not match the action of Battle Royale, but it's the biggest party in Fortnite, and everyone can play along.
