Fortnite is a Battle Royale game with various team game modes, so it's always been possible for gamers to communicate with their squadmates. However, even though it's a highly requested feature, it never included proximity chat, which makes it possible for players to hear the sound that goes through the microphone of any nearby players.

Fortnite: How to Turn On Aim Assist

Aim assist can greatly increase controller players' precision in Fortnite - here's how to change these advanced settings.

Proximity chat is only available in Fortnite Creative for now, but this could be a way to test it for Battle Royale in the future. Nevertheless, this guide will show players how proximity chat works in Fortnite so they enable or disable it according to their preferences.

How to Use Proximity Chat

Epic Games added proximity chat to Fortnite Creative to open up new gameplay possibilities for creator-made experiences. Proximity chat is only possible if it was enabled when the map was created. This feature is turned off by default, so if a creator wants their Fortnite island to include proximity chat, they must turn it on by opening the Island Settings menu, selecting Mode, and then the Voice Chat Section, where they will find the Proximity Chat option.

Once proximity chat is enabled, creators can select the following options:

  • Full Voice Distance: determines at which distances gamers will be able to hear each other loud and clear
  • Falloff Distance: determines the distance that it takes for gamers to gradually stop being able to hear another player

How to Disable Proximity Chat

Players might stumble upon a Fortnite Creative Island with proximity chat enabled. Not everyone feels comfortable with this feature, and if that's the case, gamers need to learn how to disable it so they can avoid uncomfortable encounters in-game.

Unless gamers are the island's creator, they can't disable proximity chat in Fortnite for everyone, but they can make it so they don't hear other players. To do this, open the Settings menu while on the island, go to Audio, and then scroll down to the Voice Chat section. Players can select their Voice Chat preferences, and if they set to "Friends Only" or "Off", they won't be able to listen to anyone that they don't know. Alternatively, they can also set it to "Friends and Teammates" so they can hear those in their team but are able to ignore the others around them.

Alternatively, if proximity chat is important for a Creative Island's objective, gamers might want to turn on visualized sound effects in Fortnite so they can see nearby players' footsteps even if they can't hear their microphones.
