Summary
- A Mortal Kombat Easter Egg featuring Dan Forden was briefly added to Fortnite before being removed.
- The Easter Egg was a nod to a decades-old reference in Mortal Kombat 2, marking a crossover with Fortnite.
- The appearance of Dan Forden's image in Fortnite may be hinting at the arrival of Scorpion as a playable character.
A cheeky Mortal Kombat Easter Egg was added in a recent Fortnite patch, one that sees an original developer pop up on screen very briefly. This new Easter Egg is so quick that some players likely thought it was a glitch or an unintentional effect associated with Fortnite's new Sub-Zero Skin, but quite the contrary, as it's actually a decades-old reference to the Mortal Kombat franchise itself. The Easter Egg has since been removed, although it's made quite a buzz in the Fortnite and Mortal Kombat communities.
Customization is king in Fortnite, with the game now allowing players to personalize their experience in a number of ways. Outside the basic skin and back bling options, players can also equip special pickaxes and trail effects, as well as select between different kicks, Fortnite's latest cosmetic category. With each new season comes more cosmetics, especially new skins, with Fortnite's Chapter 6 Season 2 update marking the arrival of legendary Mortal Kombat character Sub-Zero, who acts as the final reward of the base pass. Sub-Zero will be instantly familiar to longtime Mortal Kombat fans, though the skin also includes an old reference that seasoned players will get a kick out of as well.
Lara Croft May Be Returning to Fortnite, With a Twist
Lara Croft may make a comeback to the Fortnite universe in the latest season of the massively popular game, but this time with a twist.
Shortly after a recent Fortnite patch dropped, players who were using Sub-Zero began to notice an image of a seemingly random man would appear at the bottom of their screen if they used his Kombat Kit to get an elimination. The image is of Dan Forden, a former Midway sound programmer who first appeared as an Easter Egg in Mortal Kombat 2. Forden would sometmies appear during Mortal Kombat 2 matches if a player performed an uppercut. Originally, Forden would appear saying the word "Toasty!," though the recent Fortnite Easter Egg does not have any sound.
Epic Games Adds "Toasty!" Mortal Kombat Reference to Fortnite
What makes this rather cheeky Easter Egg even more interesting is that Toasty is also the name of Scorpion's Fatality, meaning Epic Games may be teasing the arrival of this equally iconic Mortal Kombat character. Scorpion has been rumored to be coming to Fortnite along with other famous characters for quite some time. With the arrival of Sub-Zero, it seems very likely Scorpion will soon make his debut. Interestingly, Epic Games has since disabled the new Toasty Easter Egg.
Fortnite recently launched its Chapter 6 Season 2 update, which made significant changes to the island and weapon pool, as well as the game's overarching storyline. New areas, such as Crime City and Outlaw Oasis, have become popular spots for players to land, with weapons like Fortnite's new Pump & Dump weapon shaking things up considerably. Chapter 6 Season 2 is expected to wrap up on May 2, meaning Fortnite players still have a decent chunk of time left to enjoy and explore.
