It’s going to be a big year for Halo in 2026, and many fans and non-fans recognize it for helping console exclusive first-person shooters thrive.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops
The Numbers Mason
Call of Duty: Black Ops
- Released
- November 9, 2010
Call of Duty fans recall the narrative of Call of Duty: Black Ops fondly, as it changed things up and told a spy thriller story set in the 1960s. As a CIA agent, Alex Mason is tasked with uncovering Cold War secrets one stealth mission at a time.
The overall narrative revolves around extracting the meaning behind a specific set of code numbers, which all tie into the ending and the Black Ops subseries as a whole. It was a cool new direction for the franchise, proving that a CoD game didn’t have to feature big, bombastic war zones to be considered engaging.

Wolfenstein: The New Order was a great reboot for the series. It begins in the familiar World War 2 timeline of the 1940s. Even though mainstay hero B.J. Blazkowicz gave it his all, he failed along with the rest of the Allies, leading to a victory for the Nazis.
After recovering from an injury, the game warps ahead to the 1960s, where B.J. And other resistance members try to fight back against their Nazi supreme leaders. Thanks to a balance of truly terrifying villains and surprisingly heartfelt humor, Wolfenstein: The New Order was exactly the kind of reboot the Wolfenstein series needed.

BioShock is a creepy game that uses its underwater setting of Rapture very well. Upon crash landing in the ocean, Jack swims to a nearby lighthouse, find an elevator inside, and discovers the underwater city hiding below the waves, but all is not right in this utopia.
The citizens have gone mad, killing and eating one another while wielding makeshift weapons and sometimes special powers. Players will have to uncover what went wrong, and while there are debates about the ending’s merits, it is a strong narrative throughout with a hell of a twist to close things out.

Fallout: New Vegas starts with players being shot by a mysterious stranger in the desert. Fortunately for them, they survive, and their main task, besides surviving the wastelands of the Vegas area in the post-apocalyptic U.S., is to find this suited thug and give him a talking to.
While players cannot directly talk in the story, as the main character is silent and nameless, they can shape how they want their character to act by guiding the story through dialogue choices and stat upgrades. It’s up to players how good they want their redemption arc to be.
Resident Evil Village
If Kojima Made A Resident Evil Game
Resident Evil Village
- Released
- May 7, 2021
Resident Evil Village is the second mainline game in the series to use a first-person perspective and star Ethan Winters. This time, Ethan travels to a vague European village looking for his daughter, who has been kidnapped by the franchise’s familiar hero, Chris Redfield.
How Chris ties into everything is a good mystery that drives the plot forward, and the central villains are like a squad of charismatic baddies that would appear in a Hideo Kojima game. From spooky dolls to werewolves, there’s a lot of scary content in the game that helps it be even more compelling.
Call Of Juarez: Gunslinger
The Unreliable Wild West
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger
- Released
- May 22, 2013
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger was an interesting entry in the series and unlike anything that came before it. The game begins with an old gunslinger, Silas, retelling his glory days as a bounty hunter to fellow patrons in a bar.
Call of Juarez Could Be Making a Comeback After 12 Years
Dying Light developer Techland may be preparing to resurrect an old FPS franchise from the PS3 and Xbox 360 era, Call of Juarez.
Instead of being a straightforward narrative, the conditions around missions are constantly reworked as Silas changes his story of what was really going on as he remembers new details or has his facts challenged by the other patrons. There aren’t many games with unreliable narrators who actively change gameplay scenarios on the fly, making Call of Juarez: Gunslinger unique on top of having a harrowing story for Wild West fans to dig into.
Why The Outer Worlds 2 Is A Better RPG Than A Shooter
For those who are shying away from The Outer Worlds 2's FPS gunplay, the game offers more RPG elements than you may think.
