Evil Egg is Steam's latest arcade-style twin-stick shooter that's been receiving promising reviews, and it's completely free to play. The genre has seen several successful indie releases on Steam in recent years, including Greedland, Dead Estate, and Kill Knight. What sets Evil Egg apart is its arcade-style gameplay, which appears heavily inspired by classic '80s games.

Typically, twin-stick shooter games use two movement mechanics: one for controlling the character and the other for aiming, while bullets are fired automatically. That's the core element of the gameplay. This control setup was popular in arcade machines and later carried over to home consoles, thanks to controllers with dual thumbsticks. Utilizing the same control scheme, Evil Egg takes players back to the era when arcade machines were still thriving.

New Free Steam Game Has 'Overwhelmingly Positive' Reviews

A newly-launched exploration adventure game, that too free-to-play, is racking up tens of thousands of glowing player reviews on Steam.

Evil Egg Is a Top-Down Twin-Stick Shooter Inspired by Arcade Machines

According to its Steam page, Evil Egg draws inspiration from arcade cabinets of the '80s, though developer Ivy Sly describes it more intriguingly. The game is presented as a faithful recreation of a supposedly infamous arcade title known for its brutal gameplay, based on the last known Evil Egg cabinet. Of course, this appears to be a fictional backstory meant to highlight its retro influences from '80s and '90s arcade games. There are no records of a real arcade machine with that name, and the current Steam release seems to be an original work launched on October 30, 2025. The good news for fans is that, whether the backstory is fact or fiction, Evil Egg can be claimed on Steam for free and has already earned a "Very Positive" user review score, suggesting it's well worth trying.

Evil Egg includes flashing lights and strobe effects that may affect players who are sensitive to light.

As for the gameplay, players control a 2D shape that blasts nearby enemies, with visuals that closely resemble Geometry Wars, one of the most popular titles in the twin-stick shooter genre. According to developer Ivy Sly, Evil Egg features infinite levels and online leaderboards, giving fans of shoot 'em up games plenty of reasons to spend hours chasing new high scores.

It's worth noting that developer Ivy Sly previously released a tactical 2D turn-based game on Steam in 2023 called Your Only Move Is HUSTLE, which became a huge success and now holds an Overwhelmingly Positive rating from over 30,000 reviews. Given the popularity of its earlier title, Evil Egg is likely to attract a lot of attention on Steam, and being free-to-play only boosts its chances of going viral and building a loyal player base.
