Summary

  • A new Freedom Wars Remastered update fixed crash bugs on all platforms.
  • The latest patch addresses a Switch-specific crash related to the Accessory system.
  • The PC version patch may resolve performance issues due to Windows 11 update 24H.

Publisher Bandai Namco and developer Dimps have released a new update for Freedom Wars Remastered to address some outstanding bugs and issues. Released on January 10, 2025, Freedom Wars Remastered is an updated re-release of 2014's Freedom Wars, a co-op action RPG once exclusive to the PS Vita handheld.

Though the trend of game publishers and developers remastering older titles has faced criticism in the past, one positive aspect of the movement is that some games are getting a second life on newer, more accessible platforms. That much is true for Freedom Wars. Without the remaster, the game would be trapped on the PS Vita, a discontinued platform, and the Freedom Wars server shutdown of 2021 left those remaining without access to the game's online multiplayer component. Now, Freedom Wars Remastered gives Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC users the ability to experience the game's unique setting and cooperative gameplay.

Freedom Wars Remastered Review

Freedom Wars Remastered has many of the same flaws as the PS Vita original, but is still a lot of fun for fans of Monster Hunter-style games.

Freedom Wars Remastered also benefits from up-to-date patches, as evidenced by the latest update to the game. Released on January 17, the latest Freedom Wars Remastered patch addresses some crashing issues experienced by players on all platforms. It also tackles a Switch-specific crash issue related to the Freedom Wars Remastered Accessory system. The Accessory is an android NPC partner that follows the player and is a unique part of the Freedom Wars story and setting.

The latest Freedom Wars Remastered update mainly addresses issues that cause the game to crash on all platforms. The patch notes don't specify just what the crash bugs are, but prior to the patch, players on social media complained about crashes kicking them out of Freedom Wars Remastered online multiplayer sessions, disrupting their play. The patch also addresses a crash bug caused on the Switch when players use a specific Japanese Accessory voice option.

For the PC version, the new Freedom Wars Remastered patch may fix some performance issues related to Windows 11 version 24H2. Deployed by Microsoft in late 2024, Windows 11 update 24H2 has attracted criticism for causing compatibility and performance issues for some games. Even major Ubisoft franchises like Assassin's Creed suffered from Windows 11 issues related to update 24H2, only recently receiving patches to address the problems.

The end of the patch notes also include a message for PC users who may be making changes to the in-game files of Freedom Wars Remastered. The message encouraged such users to return the files to their "original state" before applying the update, so as not to risk problems during installation. Though not mentioning them directly, the message is likely addressed to some methods used by the Freedom Wars Remastered community to adjust the language options for Accessories.
