Summary

  • Kadokawa Corporation has 20 games in development for consoles and 6 for mobile devices.
  • Kadokawa owns Tenchu and Octopath Traveler IPs, expanding its game portfolio.
  • FromSoftware's development of smaller projects may lead to sequels on a smaller scale.

Kadokawa Corporation, FromSoftware's parent company, recently announced that more than 20 games are currently in active development. According to the report released during its latest financial statement, the majority of these titles are being created for consoles, while others are intended for mobile devices. FromSoftware, known for popular franchises like Dark Souls and Armored Core, is one of the developers involved in this large-scale project.

Kadokawa Corporation acquired FromSoftware in 2014. Since then, the Japanese developer has produced games such as Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Elden Ring, and Armored Core 6. Fans have long been clamoring for sequels to games like Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, though it's uncertain if these will come to fruition. In an interview, company president Hidetaka Miyazaki mentioned that FromSoftware tackling multiple smaller projects would be a logical step following Elden Ring's release. If sequels to these games happen, they would likely be on a smaller scale than Elden Ring.

Elden Ring Consort Radahn First Phase
FromSoftware’s Future Bosses Should Be More Like Malenia and Less Like Consort Radahn in One Way

Elden Ring's Consort Radahn caught a lot of flak, and this could be avoided in future games by following the footsteps of Malenia's boss fight.

According to GameWatch, Kadokawa is working on 26 games, with 20 of those dedicated to consoles and the remaining six targeted for mobile. Besides FromSoftware, other subsidiaries under Kadokawa include Spike Chunsoft, the developer behind Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero, and Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island. Japanese studio Gotcha Gotcha Games, which holds the RPG Maker IP, is also a Kadokawa subsidiary.

Kadokawa Is The Owner of Tenchu and Octopath Traveler IPs

Kadokawa has recently expanded its network of developers to support its growing game portfolio. In December 2023, Kadokawa acquired the gaming studio Acquire, creator of Tenchu and Octopath Traveler, further consolidating its development partnerships. This expansion shows Kadokawa's strategic preparation for increased game production following its recent solid market performance, mainly driven by the success of Elden Ring and its DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree.

In total, Kadokawa has four game studios under its umbrella, though this doesn't mean all productions are reserved solely for them. The company also outsources development for other titles, such as Metal Max Xeno, which was developed by Cattle Call. Still, following the announcement of this extensive development lineup, fans quickly began requesting a Bloodborne remaster or at least a PC port. However, while FromSoftware developed the game, Sony holds the Bloodborne IP, so any decision regarding a remaster or remake rests with Sony.
