Slated to release in 2027, Frostpunk: 1886 is an Unreal Engine remake of the original Frostpunk released in 2018. It's more than a graphical overhaul, however, with 11 bit devs previously confirming it would feature new content, new mechanics, and a new Purpose path, among other features. Some of those new mechanics for Frostpunk: 1886 may find their origins in Frostpunk 2.
Frostpunk 2 released near the end of 2024, and based on its roadmap, it will be getting free content updates and major DLCs through 2026. There's only a six-year difference between the release of Frostpunk and Frostpunk 2, but as game development is rapidly changing, it's no surprise that some features and mechanics in Frostpunk 2 are, as a whole, just better. Frostpunk: 1886 will take advantage of these features, revealed game director Maciej Sułecki in a The Best War Games interview.
Frostpunk 2 Releases Free Major Content Update
Frostpunk 2 finally gets its first major content update since launch, bringing a plethora of new features to the city-building game.
Frostpunk: 1886 Will Borrow Systems and Mechanics From Frostpunk 2
The idea to remake the original Frostpunk originated during Frostpunk 2's shift to Unreal Engine, so the two projects have always been closely related. It's not surprising to know that Frostpunk: 1886 will remake the original but also borrow some features from the sequel. However, Sułecki couldn't quite confirm a feature list because the team is still evaluating its options. After all, the scale difference between Frostpunk and Frostpunk 2 is considerable, so any borrowed features need to fit like a glove in Frostpunk: 1886.
As Sułecki explained,
Yeah, we are currently in the process of evaluating the assets and mechanics of the first game, and we have a very solid foundation that we built on Frostpunk 2. We have a lot of systems and a lot of mechanics that we borrow from the second game in the first one. We haven't decided yet on all those systems because the games are different. Those systems need to fit really, really good with the first one, so there will be, for sure, improvements and quality of life improvements. But we don't have a solid list yet.
Between Frostpunk 2's post-launch support, the eventual release of Frostpunk: 1886, and the potential support for it throughout 2027, fans are in for a real treat. That is a considerable pipeline of content for the two games stretching, at the very least, the next two years. This is not surprising, however, as 11 bit envisions Frostpunk as a world and as its own franchise.
There's no telling what the future holds, but it seems Frostpunk has a bright future ahead of it nonetheless. The same could be said for 11 bit studios. Frostpunk is just one of its many games, and the upcoming Xbox Game Pass release of The Alters bodes well for the company too. It is also publishing Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault and Death Howl, both of which are slated for release in 2025 as well.
