In the Returning to Winterhome chapter in Frostpunk 2, you discover Winterhome and must choose to either salvage it for Cores or settle it and establish a new colony. Whether you decide to salvage or settle in Winterhome, you'll need to deploy your workforce to carry out frostbreaking operations in the toxic environment. Winterhome is engulfed in toxic fumes, and prolonged exposure to these gases can result in casualties, but it is possible to avoid unnecessary deaths by reducing human exposure through establishing an Automated Workforce Factory in this colony.

The first time you lose a portion of the workforce to toxic fumes, the faction aligned with the Progress path will propose that you build an Automated Workforce Factory to prevent further loss of human lives. However, building an Automated Workforce Factory isn't as straightforward as constructing a Housing or Extraction District. If you haven't already built one earlier, the process might seem a bit confusing. So, here's everything you need to know about constructing an Automated Workforce Factory in Winterhome.

Researching Automated Workforce Factory In Frostpunk 2

Frostpunk 2 - Automated Workforce Factory

Unlike districts and hubs, the Automated Workforce Factory is an upgrade to the Industrial Districts, and it must be unlocked by researching the idea under the Resources section of the Idea Tree.

The Automated Workforce Factory is considered a radical idea, and passing the corresponding law in the Council will be challenging without negotiations or rigging the votes.

The Automated Workforce Factory replaces humans with machines, and the faction that favors Adaptation and Tradition will be displeased with your decision to research and realize this idea. However, the Automated Workforce Factory will help you save needless deaths in Winterhome, speeding up frostbreaking by eliminating the need to rely on the Safe Frostbreak.

Building an Automated Workforce Factory requires the following resources:

Once built, the Automated Workforce Factory will produce an additional 1,600 workforce. This automated workforce unlocks the automated frostbreaking ability and allows you to access dangerous areas in Winterhome without having to risk human lives.

Building The Automated Workforce Factory In Frostpunk 2

Once you've researched the Automated Workforce Factory and passed the relevant law in the Council, you can proceed to build it in one of the Industrial Districts in Winterhome. If you've previously upgraded any district, the process of establishing an Automated Workforce Factory will be the same.

Nonetheless, here is the step-by-step process involved in establishing an Automated Workforce Factory in Winterhome:

  • Press "B" to open the Districts panel and build an Industrial District.
  • Press "N" to open the Buildings panel, then navigate to the Industrial tab and select the Automated Workforce Factory.
  • With the Automated Workforce Factory selected, click on the Industrial District to build the factory in it.

Although the Automated Workforce Factory provides an additional workforce, it also produces significantly more squalor. If left unaddressed, growing squalor can damage other districts and even make people ill.

You can decrease squalor by building a few Filtration Towers or outfitting an Industrial District with Waste Management Facilities.
