The Research Institute is a Building in Frostpunk 2 that gives players access to the Idea Tree. It is thus very important that fans build a Research Institute, and they will be instructed to do so during the game's first chapter. For those players who may be confused about how to complete this task, this guide explains exactly how to build a Research Institute in Frostpunk 2.
While it is assumed that most readers will be trying to build a Research Institute in Frostpunk 2's story mode, the process that is outlined below also works in the Utopia Builder game mode.

Frostpunk 2: How to Place a Research Institute
Expand a Housing District
The first step toward building a Research Institute is expanding a Housing District. Indeed, while players can place a Building in many of the Districts in the game as soon as they have been constructed, that is not the case with Housing Districts. Fortunately, it is very easy to expand a Housing District, and here are the steps that fans should take:
- Click on a Housing District to make its information pane appear.
- Click on the arrows icon at the bottom of the information pane.
- Click on three tiles that are adjacent to the Housing District. Players may need to Frostbreak around their Housing District if three tiles are not available.
- Click on the checkmark that appears.
It costs 50 Heatstamps and 50 Prefabs to expand a Housing District, and an expanded Housing District provides 5 additional Shelter. Additionally, a Housing District can be expanded a second time to further increase its Output and give it a second Building slot.
Build a Research Institute
Once a Housing District has expanded, players should follow these steps to build a Research Institute within it:
- Click on the Building circle in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
- Select the Housing tab at the bottom of the screen, and click on Research Institute.
- Click on the pulsating cirlce in the expanded Housing District
It costs 400 Workforce, 100 Heatstamps, and 50 Prefabs to build a Research Institute. Additionally, 400 Workforce are required to keep the Building functioning, and it has a Heat demand of 20.
After the Research Institute is built, it will appear at the top of the Housing District's information pane. Furthermore, a new circle will appear in the bottom-right corner, which gives players access to the Idea Tree. Fans can use that tree to research new Buildings, Laws, and passive bonuses, and players who are working to complete Frostpunk 2's first chapter should begin by researching an idea for new Coal Mines.
