Hunger is a city problem in Frostpunk 2 that can increase Disease and Tension, and decrease Population Growth, if left unchecked. It is thus very important that players keep their City's Hunger under control, and there are several ways to approach that endeavor. This guide is here to elaborate upon that statement, and it will help fans address Hunger in Frostpunk 2.

Players should get in the habit of occasionally hovering over the bowl icon under the Resource Drawer at the top of the screen. This action will cause an information pane to appear, and it reveals details about Hunger in the City. If those details indicate that Hunger is "Absent," then keeping it "Stable" is acceptable. However, if Hunger is anything but "Absent," or it is "Growing," players should use the following methods to get it to "Diminishing."

Frostpunk 2: How to Decrease Hunger

Food Scarcity

Food Scarcity will activate if a player is unable to meet their City's demand for Food, and indeed that effect is what causes Hunger to increase. As such, players who are trying to decrease their City's Hunger must focus on maintaining a Food surplus in order to eliminate Food Scarcity. Here are the actions that strategy game fans can take to meet their City's Food demands, and they will know that they have overcome Food Scarcity if the bar beneath the plant icon at the top of the screen is gold:

If a player has a stockpile of Food, they can maintain a Food surplus even while the number next to the plant icon is negative. However, Food Scarcity will become active as soon as the stockpile is consumed, and fans of city-builders should use the following methods to turn the number positive before that occurs.

  • Research Ideas in these nodes, which give access to Buildings that increase Food output, and build them in Districts:
    • Hothouses (Idea Tree: Resources). Built in Food Districts.
    • Advanced Hothouses (Idea Tree: Resources). Built in Food Districts.
    • Panaceum Factory (Idea Tree: Society). Built in Industrial Districts. This is a Radical Idea that requires progress with Reason.

Building a Hothouse in a Food District gives the District the "Excessive Fertilisation" ability. This ability can be activated by clicking on the Food District and then clicking on the "Excessive Fertilisation" circle at the bottom of the information pane that appears, and it increases Food Production Efficiency. However, "Excessive Fertilisation" also increases Disease in Frostpunk 2.

  • Activate the "Emergency Shifts" ability in Food Districts. This ability increases Production Efficiency, but it also decreases Trust.
  • Enact Laws that target Food. Here is a list of those Laws along with details about how they are made available in the Council Hall:
    • Food Additives: Forged Additives or Chemical Additives (Council: Surival). Available immediately.
    • Childhood: Mandatory School (Council: Society). Available immediately.
  • Increase overall Production Efficiency to improve Food output in Food Districts. While several options for increasing Production Efficiency in Frostpunk 2 have already been noted, here are more than players can pursue:
    • Research Waste Heat Conversion: Heat Overclocking (Idea Tree: Resources), and enact it as a Law (Council: Survival).
    • Research Work Compensation: Efficiency Bonus (Idea Tree: City), and enact it as a Law (Council: City).
    • Research Labour Organisation: Labour Oversight (Idea Tree: City), and enact it as a Law (Council: City).
    • Research Workplace Control: Empowered Management (Idea Tree: City), and enact it as a Law (Council: City). This is a Radical Idea that requires progress with Merit.
    • Research an idea in Workers' Housing (Idea Tree: City), and build the unlocked Building in an appropriate District.
    • Research Drugs Manufactory: Stimulants Manufactory (Idea Tree: City), and build the unlocked Building in an Industrial District. This is a Radical Idea that requires progress with Merit.
    • Research Rail Hubs (Idea Tree: Hubs), and build them near Food Districts.
    • Enact Basic Necessities: Paid Essentials (Council: City).

  • Find locations in the Frostland that generate Food, and extract resources from them. Some of these locations (Harvesting Areas) can be exploited simply by dedicating Frostland Teams to them, while others (Outposts) must be connected to the City with a Trail or Skyway in Frostpunk 2.

Players can increase the rate at which they receive food from Harvesting Areas by researching an Idea within Harvester Hangers (Idea Tree: Frostland) and constructing the Building that they unlock in a Logistics District.

  • Decrease Population by sending people to an established Colony. This option will become available as players explore Frostpunk 2's Frostland, though they will still need to take care of the transported Populatin's Food demand when they reach their new home.
