During the first chapter of Frostpunk 2, players are instructed to find a permanent source of fuel outside the City. This task will ultimately lead fans to the Old Dreadnought in the Frostland, and they will be forced to make a choice before they can establish a Colony in that location. Specifically, players must either remove the bodies or respect the dead in Frostpunk 2's Oil Tombs, and this guide is here to detail the ramifications of that decision.

While this guide will recommend a specific approach to this choice, players (especially those on lower difficulty settings) should feel free to use this decision as an opportunity for role-playing rather than gaining a strategic advantage.

Players who have questions about the length of Frostpunk 2's campaign, and about its open-ended game mode, can find answers here.

Frostpunk 2: Remove the Bodies vs. Respect the Dead

The first thing that is affected by this decision is the number of Oil tiles to which players will have access upon establishing a Colony at the Old Dreadnought. More specifically, fans who select "remove the bodies" can freely build Extraction Districts on three Oil tiles. By contrast, Frostpunk 2 players who opt to "respect the dead" can build on only two Oil tiles, though they can reverse their decision, and build on the third tile, at any time.

Players who choose to "respect the dead" and then decide that they want to establish an Extraction District on the third Oil tile will find that Disease is increased by building around it. However, this effect only becomes active if three of the Extraction District's tiles are built within the Diseased area. Fans can thus avoid increasing their Disease in Frostpunk 2 by Frostbreaking to tiles around the Diseased area and making sure that most of the Extraction District is placed on those safe tiles.

This decision does not only determine Oil availability at the Old Dreadnought, though, as it also impacts an event that occurs around Week 330. This event centers around the arrival of a group of Wanderers, and players must either give them Oil or protect themselves with Guard Squads. While strategy game fans will need to pursue one of those options regardless of how they dealt with the bodies, those that remove the bodies must hand over more Oil (or have more Guard Squads) than those that choose to respect the dead (and stick with that decision).

frostpunk 2 remove bodies respect dead

On Citizen, Frostpunk 2's easiest difficulty setting, players who "remove the bodies" must give the Wanderers 30,000 Oil within 48 weeks or have 12 Guard Squads at the Old Dreadnought by the time that they return. Fans who "respect the dead" must give the Wanderers 24,000 Oil within 48 weeks or have 8 Guard Squads in Frostpunk 2.

It is thus recommended that players "respect the dead." Indeed, this approach minimizes the impact of the Wanderers event, and fans of post-apocalyptic games should have no trouble surviving with just two Oil-producing Extraction Districts (provided that they construct buildings that increase Oil output within them). Furthermore, if the player finds that they really do need access to more Oil, they can always build on the third Oil tile after the Wanderers event is complete and avoid the repercussions associated with removing the bodies straightaway.
