Summary
- Bugs in The Last of Us 2 can cause untimely deaths, and that exact thing happened to an unlucky Permadeath player mid-cutscene.
- In the clip shared by Reddit user OK_Meat_440, Ellie was shown falling through the ground to her demise during a conversation with Dina.
- Thankfully, selection of "per chapter" saved the player from starting over completely, as they only had to return to the start of the chapter.
It's no secret that even the most high-profile video game releases can have their share of quirks and glitches, as one The Last of Us 2 player can attest after a bug led to their untimely death in the middle of a cutscene. The player was sitting back watching the scene play out as usual when it was rudely interrupted by the sudden death of The Last of Us 2 protagonist Ellie after she inexplicably fell through the floor and died.
To make matters worse, the player was allegedly in the midst of a permadeath run in The Last of Us 2, meaning that the unfortunate bug could have cost them some precious progress. Luckily for them, they had selected the "per chapter" setting, meaning their progress will only reset to the beginning of that chapter, which in this case, is right before the scene in question.
Disturbing The Last of Us 2 Bug Turns Dina Into a Human Backpack
A Last of Us 2 player online shares a disturbing glitch that they have discovered, which turns Ellie's companion Dina into a human backpack.
The player shared a clip of the whole fiasco on Reddit in the official community for The Last of Us, depicting the whole thing as Ellie speaks to Dina in an emotionally-charged conversation before suddenly falling out of bounds through the floor and dying. The clip ends with a brief menu confirming the player's permadeath status and that, fortunately, they only lost about five minutes of progress since the scene occurs at the beginning of the chapter.
This The Last of Us 2 Cutscene Bug Has Apparently Happened Before
Apparently, this is not the first time this has happened, either, as the original poster mentioned in a reply to someone's comment that it happened to them multiple times in the past, which is why they chose to play on the "per chapter" mode to prevent a significant loss of progress. Others chimed in as well, stating that they had experienced similar The Last of Us 2 glitches throughout their playthroughs, with some saying it's so frequent that it discourages them from doing a "whole game" permadeath run.
The Last of Us 2 received a permadeath mode after a free update alongside the ultra-difficult "Grounded" setting, with the update encouraging players to combine the two for a brutal survival experience. Carried over from the first game, "Grounded" mode removes players' HUDs and effectively makes The Last of Us 2 extremely realistic, as Ellie and Abby can die in a single hit from most of the game's enemies and have very little ammo and materials to work with.
It is unclear whether the user was playing the original release or the remastered version that came out on PS5 earlier this year. In any case, though, occasional glitches are nothing new for Naughty Dog, as they thankfully happen far less often in The Last of Us 2 than they did in the intense backlash for the notoriously buggy PC release of The Last of Us Part 1.
