One of the most anticipated movies of the year, James Cameron's first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash has finally been revealed. However, even though the stunning visuals of the film and the reveal of the Mangkwan clan, a new Na'vi people that Jake Sully and Neytiri's family cross paths with, have audiences in a state of awe, it's Varang, the leader of the Ash People, that has some only realizing the movie's connection to Game of Thrones.
This time, in the franchise's third film installment, audiences will be transported back to Pandora as Sully's family faces a brand-new type of danger, as they encounter the antagonistic Ash Clan, led by the powerful and seemingly untouchable by fire, Varang, played by Oona Chaplin. The Avatar: Fire and Ash cast also includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, David Thewlis, Jemaine Clement, Cliff Curtis, and Stephen Lang in what could be one of the biggest and boldest films of the year. However, other than that very small detail, Avatar fans who have just watched the trailer have connected the dots between the leader Varang and another Queen in George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones.
James Cameron Promises A Lot More Depth In Morally Grey Avatar: Fire and Ash
Avatar: Fire and Ash will be the first project in the series not expected to bring groundbreaking new visuals, but it's got something arguably better.
Varang’s Voice Actor in Avatar: Fire and Ash Was Also in Game of Thrones
For those who have just watched the new trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash and are wondering where they recognize the villain Varang from, wonder no more, as Oona Chaplin is the person behind the character who also played Talisa Maegyr in HBO's huge fantasy series Game of Thrones. Since Talisa was last seen over 12 years ago now in season 3, her story in the grand scheme of all things Game of Thrones may have fallen a bit short with some fans for the underrated character, but for a quick reminder, Talisa fell in love with Robb Stark and even though their romance got off to a great start, with Talisa even falling pregnant, the power couple's world soon got turned upside down at the infamous Red Wedding scene, where they were both slaughtered.
Her death in Game of Thrones was one of the most brutal in the entire series and shocked fans more than many other deaths due to the horrific act that saw her unborn child also being murdered. However, outside of Game of Thrones, Chaplin's career thankfully flourished, where she has made appearances in Netflix's anthology series Black Mirror, Kitty Trevelyan in the BBC drama The Crimson Field, and Zilpha Geary in the series Taboo. Even though Oona has played some incredible characters, being the granddaughter of English filmmaker and actor Charlie Chaplin might be the most impressive out of the bunch.
With the introduction of Varang and the Ash People in Avatar: Fire and Ash, alongside a new setting with a much darker tone, it looks like Avatar 3 will take the world of Pandora to a new and exciting place when it releases in theaters on December 19, 2025.
