Game of Thrones is set to get a sequel series sometime in the future, and it could potentially give fans the ending many were hoping for. Since the controversial finale aired, Game of Thrones continues to be one of the most popular fantasy franchises around, but the original show's ending still doesn't sit well with some fans.

Despite the backlash that Game of Thrones' finale received, it hasn't stopped the franchise from earning several spin-offs, with the Targaryen-focused House of the Dragon being a solid hit for HBO Max. Another upcoming spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, takes place a full century before the events of Game of Thrones. These two prequel series aim to show a different side of its fantasy world, but a recently confirmed sequel series will finally give answers as to what Westeros is like following Game of Thrones' storyline.

George R.R. Martin Confirms a Game of Thrones Sequel Series Is in the Works

George R.R. Martin revealed at the 2025 Iceland Noir Festival that a "a sequel or two" set in the Game of Thrones universe was in the works. It's unclear what the timeline for these secretive sequels will be, but it's unlikely that they will arrive any time soon, since Martin's words make it seem as though the two sequels are merely early concepts at the moment.

There's also the chance that the sequels could be scrapped down the road. Previously, HBO had plans to make a series based around Jon Snow, but it was shelved due to story complications. Even though Martin's tease of two sequel shows is exciting for Game of Thrones fans who are hoping to continue the series beyond the show's finale, there is still the possibility that they become shelved, too.

Hopefully, this isn't the case. For many, the ending of Game of Thrones was incredibly ambiguous, as it left some characters with open-ended storylines. Sometimes, ambiguous endings can be powerful, but Game of Thrones' finale left a lot of longtime fans unsatisfied. It remains one of the most polarizing series finales in TV history, so if there are two sequel series in the works, Game of Thrones fans may eventually get some closure to the many unanswered questions that the finale left.
