Summary

  • X-Men '97 and Alone in the Dark are making a comeback on the same day, appealing to nostalgia and new audiences alike.
  • X-Men '97 continues the original animated series, while Alone in the Dark offers a reimagined version with updated gameplay.
  • The success of these revivals will determine the future of each franchise.

This coming Wednesday, March 20 will see the revival of both X-Men: The Animated Series and the survival-horror game Alone in the Dark, two series that originated in 1992. Series reboots and revivals happen all the time, to varying degrees of success. Sometimes they are smash hits that remind everyone why they liked the series in the first place, but other times, they serve as reminders as to why it was left dormant to begin with.

Whenever a new reboot or revival comes out, it has to walk a balancing act between appealing to nostalgia and breaking new ground. The need to appeal to both longtime fans and a new audience makes reboots and revivals tough to pull off, but both X-Men '97 and the 2024 reimagining of Alone in the Dark stand a shot at living up to or even exceeding expectations. What's interesting is that both revivals are releasing on the very same day - Wednesday, March 20.

X-Men '97: Reason Showrunner Beau DeMayo Was Fired Possibly Revealed By New Report

Marvel Studios fired X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo under unknown circumstances, but a new report may shed light on the subject.

X-Men '97 and Alone in the Dark are both set to launch Wednesday, March 20, with X-Men '97 landing on the Disney+ streaming service with its first two episodes and Alone in the Dark launching for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. Notably, both X-Men '97 and Alone in the Dark are revivals of something that originated in the early 90s, with both of them coming out in 1992. The jury is still out on the quality of either revival, but it's still interesting to see that two things from 1992 are making a big comeback on the very same day 32 years later.

What is X-Men '97 About?

X-Men '97 picks up directly where the events of X-Men: The Animated Series left off. Without venturing into spoiler territory, the show follows the team of X-Men from the animated show, with Cyclops serving as the leader. After the first two episodes of X-Men '97 premiere on March 20, new episodes will air weekly for a total of 10 episodes in Season 1. A second season of X-Men '97 is also in the works, though one has to imagine that future seasons will be dependent on the success of the first two. The original X-Men: The Animated Series is often pointed to as one of the best animated shows of all time, so X-Men '97 better come out swinging.

What is Alone in the Dark About?

While it clearly takes inspiration from the Resident Evil remakes, the new Alone in the Dark game is not a remake. Instead, it is a reimagining of the original Alone in the Dark from 1992. It uses an over-the-shoulder camera instead of the classic fixed-camera angles of the original, though it still features Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood exploring Derceto Manor. Alone in the Dark has players going toe-to-toe with monstrous beings and solving tricky puzzles as they attempt to get to the bottom of the mansion's mysteries. Players will be able to experience it all for themselves come March 20.
