A gamer has demonstrated how they successfully telecommuted to work from within The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. Through a clever combination of tools and assets, this Skyrim fan was able to bask in some of the most idyllic places within Tamriel all while working.
Over the years, Skyrim has evolved from what it was at launch, with new versions and a never-ending supply of mods. The virtual reality version of Skyrim, which launched back in 2017, is one manner of reliving the game in a completely new way, and that’s what this fan did to combine their day job with Skyrim.
The Best Skyrim Mods, Ranked
Skyrim has been around for years, and fans have gotten more and more creative with its mods. These are the best ones out there.
YouTuber Goes to Work... Inside Skyrim
YouTuber Habie147 decided to challenge himself to see whether he could work his actual job while enjoying the world of Skyrim. The YouTuber regularly plays virtual reality games on his channel, and utilized Skyrim VR in order to complete this challenge. In order to achieve the challenge, Habie147 booted up Skyrim VR through Steam. By using the Steam VR overlay system, he was able to pull up browser windows, allowing him to access his work in his email, Slack account, and even work in QuickBooks while the game continued running all around him. As the game kept tracking the movement of his character while he worked, he could readily look around and enjoy the scenery of the game world while otherwise occupied.
Habie147 explained that part of his goal was to find a peaceful place to work in, as he found his phone too distracting. He initially settled down in a campsite, which was perfect up until he got aggro from a random thief. After that, he tried a few different locations, and finally settled in an underground spot full of bioluminescent mushrooms. He eventually grew a bit stircrazy after a couple hours underground, so he moved on to the top of a mountain. With a little tinkering, an aurora borealis appeared in the sky, and Habie147 took a phone call from a co-worker, all while admiring the beautiful VR scenery of Skyrim around him. Even though the setup might be distracting for some gamers, Habie147 found the experience to be great, except for the weight of his VR headset after many hours of work. He even succeeded in ignoring the distractions of his phone for hours on end, so it was a successful challenge.
Virtual reality is still a relatively niche experience, though it’s become more accessible in recent years. Between the PS VR 2, Meta Quest line of headsets, and the upcoming Steam Frame, there are a lot of gamers who are either enjoying VR or are interested in trying it. While hanging out in the post-apocalyptic worlds of Half-Life: Alyx or Fallout 4 might not mesh well with working, there are probably lots of nice worlds in games like VR Chat that players could find that would be conducive to multitasking in.
However, this isn’t the first time that a player has combined the real world with Skyrim, and previous efforts didn’t even utilize virtual reality to do it. For example, one gamer successfully set up a mod that allowed them to order a pizza and soda from Doordash through the game itself. The modder even created a quest to go with it, that starts the process of gathering ingredients, and processes the order in real life as the quest is being worked on. By the time they reached the end of the quest, the pizza was actually sitting on their doorstep. Even more surprising is the fact that this isn’t the first Elder Scrolls pizza mod, as an older one allowed players to order a pizza from Dominos while playing Oblivion.
