Alan Wake 2 closes out the horror season with a powerful action adventure. Halloween is over but that doesn’t mean fans are done with feeling the spooky vibes. Alan Wake 2 is not just a horror game though, and its intense thriller and paranoia attributes help it stand out, and provide standing for games like Alan Wake 2.
There is a dual narrative perspective between a writer, Alan Wake, and an FBI Agent, Saga Anderson. It’s a detective story at its core too through alternate realities that shift perspectives on a dime. Alan Wake 2 is a trippy game to be sure, and these eight games are sure to scratch similar itches.

Control Ultimate Edition

- February 2, 2021
- Developer(s)
- Remedy Entertainment
- Platform(s)
- PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC
- Genre(s)
- Third-Person Shooter
Control feels like the obvious pick because it is the direct predecessor to Alan Wake 2. Players don’t need to go through Control to understand the events of Alan Wake 2, but it does help. For example, the agency that Agent Estevez belongs to is the same organization that gets overthrown in Control aka the Federal Bureau of Control. It’s more of a straight action game although there are horror elements to it. It was rough when it launched in 2019 but patches over the years have helped stabilize the experience.
7 Cult Of The Lamb

Cult of the Lamb

- Massive Monster

- PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
- Genre(s)
- Roguelite, Indie Games, Simulation
Cult of the Lamb is perfect for players who loved the cult aspects of Alan Wake 2. Players begin as a lamb about to get slaughtered for a cult’s gods when another god prevents the ritual from going down. This lamb then creates its own cult with the blessing of this new god. It’s sort of like Animal Crossing if it were an action roguelike. Dive into dungeons, get followers, and then build up your paradise. The cuteness is a fun juxtaposition to all of the horrific acts that players will do to their worshippers.
6 Deadly Premonition
Metascore: 68
Deadly Premonition
Deadly Premonition is not exactly what one would call a universal hit. The game was reviewed poorly but has gathered a niche audience because of the story and characters. While the mechanics are cumbersome at best, the earnestness of the characters helps make the game a charming experience.
Like Alan Wake 2, it’s clear that Deadly Premonition was inspired by Twin Peaks. Deadly Premonition probably does the weird FBI thing better via Agent Francis York Morgan. It’s one of those "so bad it’s good" types of games.

- January 27, 2023
- Developer(s)
- EA Motive
- Platform(s)
- Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC, PlayStation 5
- Genre(s)
- Survival Horror
The remake of Dead Space kicked off 2023 with a bang. It was a long time coming as fans of the series hadn’t received a new game since the third mainline entry in 2013. The remake is a faithful conversion, keeping all of the horror elements whilst making the gameplay tight. The changes that were made make a lot of sense such as the main character, Isaac Clarke, being able to speak. It’s also one of those horror games that fans will want to replay immediately with their powered-up version of Isaac in the New Game Plus mode.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 may seem like an odd choice to highlight for Alan Wake 2 fans but there is a good reason. The story of this one follows both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Players can swap between them while exploring the city, but certain missions require a specific hero. It’s just like the swapping between Alan and Saga in Alan Wake 2. There are also some horror elements in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 but saying anything more would be a spoiler.
3 Master Detective Archives: Rain Code

Master Detective Archives: Rain Code
Master Detective Archives: Rain Code is the latest game from the minds behind the equally bizarre Danganronpa series. Master Detective Yuma wakes up on a train with amnesia. He soon finds himself entangled in a murder mystery and the strangest part is that he gets a ghost partner to figure out what is going on.
This ghost, Shinigami, can take Yuma to a mind palace that helps him solve murders. It’s kind of like Saga’s Mind Place in Alan Wake 2 but a lot more trippy like an anime version of the movie Inception.
2 Resident Evil 4 (2023)
Metascore: 93
Resident Evil 4
- Released
- March 24, 2023
- Developer(s)
- Capcom
- Platform(s)
- PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S
- Genre(s)
- Survival Horror
The remake of Resident Evil 4 is equally faithful just like Dead Space. The original is well-regarded as the best in the series, and it’s easy to see why in this remake. It’s a long one too, by Resident Evil standards, and it will also probably have players coming back for even more thanks to New Game+. The only thing missing is the suitcase puzzle-like element but only a small group of fabs are lamenting that one. It’s a great year for horror and this remake is a good accompaniment to Alan Wake 2 for those looking for more action.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is probably another game alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 that will have fans scratching their heads. This is worth recommending though because, like Alan Wake 2, it is a trip and a half. The big gimmick around this latest 2D adventure starring Mario and his friends is Wonder Flowers. Touching them will turn things wild in Super Mario Bros. Wonder from Piranha Plants singing Piranha Plants, wonder seeds, to characters turning into blobs of goo. There’s a lot of imagination in this one, and it’s also worth checking out as a pallet cleanser to Alan Wake 2’s grim dark narrative.
