Summary
- Community manager Bucky responded humorously to a tweet calling DokeV a "Palworld killer," saying games can co-exist.
- Palworld's success proves there is a market for Pokemon-inspired games that tackle different genres.
- There is room for both Palworld and DokeV.
The Palworld community manager has responded to a tweet describing the upcoming game DokeV as a "Palworld killer." Palworld made a massive impact when it launched in early access earlier this year. Smashing records on Steam and Xbox Game Pass, Palworld is easily one of the year's biggest games, and if it's able to stick the landing with future updates, it should have serious longevity.
Developer Pocketpair is looking to improve Palworld with future updates that will add PvP, new islands to explore, and, of course, new Pals to catch. However, Palworld's success hasn't gone unnoticed, with reports indicating that other studios are trying to chase the trend with mobile games inspired by the open world survival title. In the meantime, other games are being stuck with the "Palworld killer" label, prompting a response from community manager Bucky.
Tencent Reportedly Working on Palworld Clones
A new report claims that Chinese giant Tencent Games is currently developing not one, but two games similar to 2024 hit Palworld.
Recently, a Twitter user shared footage of DokeV, an open world game that looks like Pokemon meets Grand Theft Auto, suggesting that it could be a Palworld killer. Bucky responded to the tweet, making fun of the idea that games can't co-exist, and saying, "DokeV still looks incredible!" Bucky then expressed hope that DokeV resurfaces soon, and praised its OST.
Pocketpair CM Responds to 'Palworld Killer' Game
DokeV turned heads with its impressive Gamescom trailer in 2021, but there haven't been many updates for the game since then. DokeV has effectively been radio silent for years, as developer Pearl Abyss focuses on the fantasy action-RPG Crimson Desert. DokeV's silence has led some fans to accuse the game of being vaporware, though maybe the studio will be inspired by Palworld's success and refocus on the promising open world monster-catching game.
Palworld proved that there is certainly a market for Pokemon-inspired games that tackle different genres than the wildly successful RPG series. There's plenty of room for both Palworld and DokeV, with the former a survival game and the latter an open world action game.
It's an exciting time to be a fan of Pokemon-style games. Besides Palworld and DokeV, fans also have a major Cassette Beasts update to look forward to that will greatly expand that critically-acclaimed game's multiplayer features. Not only that, but Pokemon itself has some exciting new projects on the horizon, with Pokemon Legends: Z-A coming in 2025 for the Nintendo Switch. The Generation 10 Pokemon games are no doubt in the works as well, though it remains to be seen when exactly they will be revealed to the masses.
