Summary

  • Monsterpatch exceeded its Kickstarter goal in 16 minutes.
  • The game is inspired by Pokemon and Stardew Valley.
  • It features pixelated graphics, monster battling, farming, and more.

Just one day after opening a Kickstarter funding goal, the solo-developed Monsterpatch has surpassed its target total, promising a monster-collecting RPG to be released for PC in December 2025. The game draws heavy inspiration from retro Pokemon games while also bringing in a taste of Stardew Valley, offering fans of creature battling and relaxing sims a heavy dose of nostalgia with this new title.

A number of games inspired by Pokemon have found success in recent years, with Palworld among the most prominent launches to catch the eye of Pokemon fans. The popularity of Palworld has largely been attributed to its introduction of new gameplay mechanics not found in the Pokemon series, and Monsterpatch looks to utilize a similar strategy with the implementation of familiar elements not yet present in the Pokemon games.

Switch 2 Game Is Like Pokemon With a Twist

A cute role-playing game that looks like Pokemon with a twist is confirmed to be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, among other platforms.

Launched on Kickstarter on March 25, 2025, Monsterpatch soared past its initial funding target of $15,000 in just 16 minutes, with an impressive $74,000 raised, at the time of writing. According to the Kickstarter page, Monsterpatch is a "love letter to retro monster collecting games" and will see players taking on the role of a young wizard capturing and caring for magical creatures while learning powerful spells, exploring a floating continent, and customizing their hometown. Monsterpatch will include a mix of monster-battling RPG elements along with farming and crafting mechanics like those in Stardew Valley. The title will also include a Townsfolk recruitment system, similar to the Animal Crossing game franchise, bringing a unique gameplay system that puts a refreshing twist on the Pokemon formula.

Adding to the similarities between Monsterpatch and old-school Pokemon video games, this new title will utilize top-down pixelated graphics and selectable user interfaces for battling, farming, interacting, and more. The creature MoNs will also belong to two of 9 Houses, similar to the Types that the pocket monsters are categorized under. These Houses are named Fireborn, Atlantian, Overgrowth, Dragoon, Whimsical, Nightwatch, Brawler, Ironclad, and Mystic. Each House rules over a city on the floating continent, and the Houses themselves are controlled by a powerful Archwizard that must be defeated in monster battle. Players can choose from 6 "starter" MoNs plus two companion creatures, as they set out to master their wizarding spellbook, customize their town, and uncover the hidden secrets of Monsterpatch.

While Monsterpatch looks to bring a satisfying blend of creature-capturing and life-sim gaming, some fans are already worried that the title is too similar to existing Pokemon games and may be faced with litigation from Nintendo. Audiences shared these exact concerns prior to Palworld getting hit with a Nintendo lawsuit, and many are now keeping their fingers crossed that Monsterpatch will be able to launch without any development or legal hurdles.
