As one of the factors that inspired the Stop Killing Games movement, nothing lasts forever. While single-player titles should theoretically always be playable if they do not require an internet connection, the same cannot be said for multiplayer and online games. There is always the risk that, at one point or another, a publisher will shut down a game's servers, particularly for projects that have been on life support for years.

August 2025 will see a few games sunset for good, so this is your last opportunity to jump into a match. A couple of projects (Nascar Heat 4 & 5, Block N Load, and EvilVEvil) have already shut down as well, and the month is only a few days old by this point. Let's highlight the other major games closing down in August 2025.

This article doesn't cover games that are set to be delisted, as that process is a different thing entirely. Also, only games sunsetting in North America will be covered.

The following projects were shut down on August 1, 2025:

ironsight battle

After more than 5 years, Ironsight is officially disconnecting its servers, a decision that WipleGames announced in May 2025. While never a massive hit by any stretch of the imagination, the military shooter did manage to develop a dedicated fanbase that kept servers relatively active until the early parts of 2023. Gameplay-wise, Ironsight mostly stuck to the early Call of Duty formula, specifically Black Ops. Honestly, that is not a bad source to use as inspiration, but competing against the biggest name in the online FPS scene is a tall task for any developer.

However, Ironsight has been struggling for quite a long time, and it has failed to average more than 200 players on Steam since June 2024. While the core fundamentals were generally there, Ironsight had issues with its Netcode and the onboarding process for new players, which limited its potential to bounce back.

Kritika Zero press kit

Another game that was delisted in May 2025 while announcing plans to shut down in August, Kritika: Zero never got the opportunity to make its Steam debut, instead opting to spend its life on VFUN. OK, Kritika is kind of a weird franchise in general, and most of its Western releases (Kritika Reboot, Kritika Global, and Kritika Online) were shut down relatively quickly, and Zero was somewhat of an attempt to reboot the license after VALOFE acquired it.

Unfortunately, the MMO brawler followed in the same footsteps as the older entries in the series, having a relatively active first year before fizzling out into nothing. Kritika is still active through a mobile game, but any PC projects seem destined for a quick closure.

Compared to the other games sunsetting in August 2025, Blacklight: Retribution has, at least, had a pretty long run. Hardsuit Labs, as Zombie Studios, originally released the game in 2012 on PC, before debuting as a PS4 launch title the following year. Since then, Blacklight has chugged along as a free-to-play FPS option, becoming a fixture on PC marketplaces and the PlayStation store. Pretty good for its era, the game received pretty consistent updates for a few years, but things started to slow down during the second half of the 2010s.

In 2019, Hardsuit shut down Blacklight: Retribution's PC servers, as it was just not popular enough on that platform to warrant further investment and resources. In January 2025, the game was delisted from the PlayStation Store and temporarily went offline. Now, to be fair, Hardsuit did bring Blacklight back online, but it was never relisted. Consequently, once news broke that the PS4 servers would be shut down on August 31, it did not come as that much of a surprise.

The biggest and most surprising game sunsetting in August 2025, Splitgate will shut down at some point during the month, although an exact date has yet to be provided. This decision was made after Splitgate 2 launched in a less-than-desirable state, garnering a very mixed reception that forced 1047 Games to rethink its strategy. The sequel was unveiled only a few years after the original Splitgate, and the announcement did seem to take the latter's playerbase by surprise.

Fears that the developer might be rushing Splitgate 2 proved to be founded once the game was released, as the free-to-play project was too rough around the edges and seemed to reduce the importance of portals, which were the first game's selling point. 1047 Games then put Splitgate 2 back into its beta stage, while opting to shut down the original game for good. The idea is that the developer will be able to focus all of its energy on making the sequel the best version of itself.
