Customization options are a feature that can get a lot of players excited about a new game. To them, gameplay and story aren’t as important as how they can create their own experience. By modern game standards, most character creator modes have pretty standard features, from different hair styles to dyes to clothing in some circumstances.
Upcoming Games All About Customization
From creating a character to personalizing their clothes, abilities, or their role in the world, these upcoming games are big on customization.
Then there are the games that go over the top with their selections to an almost wild degree that no one would try. It is great to see a variety of choices, so today, let’s celebrate the games with the most diverse and wildest character customization options, plus some options that change how players experience these games.
Baldur’s Gate 3
Larian Studios Puts a Big Emphasis On Customization
Baldur's Gate 3
- Released
- August 3, 2023
- ESRB
- M for Mature: Blood and Gore, Partial Nudity, Sexual Content, Strong Language, Violence
- Genre(s)
- RPG
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a deep RPG with many branching paths in the story, making it one of the few games that make it worth replaying multiple times. From the start, players can customize two characters, the second being a secret, and the options are staggering between body types, races, classes, and more.
Even stranger is the fact that players can assume the role of one of the party members, like Astarion, who becomes a silent protagonist in the campaign. There aren’t many games that give players control over premade characters.

- Everyone 10+ // Mild Cartoon Violence
- Genre(s)
- Action RPG, Adventure
3D Dot Game Heroes is an homage to The Legend of Zelda on the NES, complete with a similar-looking overworld map and dungeon layout. The key difference is that everything is presented in voxels, making everything look like LEGO bricks.
Players can choose premade character models for their hero, or they can create one of their own, brick by brick. When the game launched on the PS3 in 2010 in North America, players shared some of their more ridiculous designs from various animals to Cloud from Final Fantasy 7.
Saints Row 4
Talk Like A Zombie Day
Saints Row 4
- Released
- August 20, 2013
- ESRB
- M for Mature: Blood, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Sexual Content, Strong Language, Use of Drugs
- Genre(s)
- Third-Person Shooter, Open-World
Saints Row 4 lets players create The Boss of the gang with a good assortment of character choices, who also becomes The President. One of the strangest sliders will help female characters with their chest, while the male characters can adjust their trunks to funny degrees of too large to control for either gender.
The funniest part of the character creator lets players choose a voice with options that will change how the story plays out. For example, players could choose Nolan North in a sort of fourth-wall-breaking role, and in the previous game, Saints Row The Third, players could sound like a zombie hungry for brains.
Elden Ring
No Matter Your Customization Choices, You Will Die
Elden Ring
- Released
- February 25, 2022
Elden Ring is a crowning achievement for FromSoftware, as it was their first open-world game. Like most of their Soulslike games, players can create their character, including their looks and class. Classes will start players with a set of equipment and skills, but unlike other RPGs, they aren’t put into set classes that cannot be changed.
Greatest RPGs Of The Last 10 Years
A lot of RPGs have come and gone since 2015, but in the decade between then and now, these games stand as the best the genre has to offer.
As players explore, kill bosses, and level up, they can boost their stats in any direction and create hybrids like a warrior gifted in magic. Play it alone, or with two other friends online, and then just get lost in the world’s misery.
LittleBigPlanet 2
Beyond Costumes
LittleBigPlanet 2
- Released
- January 18, 2011
- ESRB
- E For Everyone due to Comic Mischief, Mild Cartoon Violence
- Genre(s)
- Platformer
LittleBigPlanet 2 had an unfair advantage over most because the game is split between two modes. The campaign had a series of levels wherein players could unlock costumes for their Sackboys, which can be mixed and matched to create some wild looks.
Great Tactical RPGs With Simple But Satisfying Mechanics
Like a good game of chess, these tactical RPGs are hard to leave alone.
There was plenty of crossover DLC to further the options, including dressing up like Final Fantasy 7 characters or DC characters. LittleBigPlanet 2 also had a game creation mode that allowed players to make their own experiences, from more platforming levels to something more outside the box, like a top-down racing game or an old-school arcade experience.
Cyberpunk 2077
Customize Your Cyborg Body in a City Where Style Comes First
Cyberpunk 2077
- Released
- December 10, 2020
Cyberpunk 2077 has a similar resizing customization option for characters like Saints Row 4, only in grittier detail. That’s a minor option to begin with, but the great thing about the game as a whole is that players can choose to be more or less human depending on what cybernetics they get.
It’s best to go into the game roleplaying as someone who wants to go full cyborg, though, because it opens up a lot of gameplay options, from sighting enemies from afar to hacking computers. There's also a whole array of fashion options for V to choose from, and stores to shop at for the perfect outfit. It’s a cyberpunk fantasy done right in an open-world environment.

- August 27, 2003
- ESRB
- t
- Genre(s)
- Tactical, Strategy, RPG
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is the first game in the tactical RPG series, which already had a lot of customization options, but the remaster, Disgaea 1 Complete, boasts even more choices. Named characters like Laharl and Etna cannot be customized visually, but how their characters progress as far as weapon ranks go can be.
Players can also create party members from different classes, styles, and there are even monsters that operate on different levels. Also, characters can be reincarnated an infinite number of times to pad out their stats, and weapons can be leveled up through compact dungeons, so this really is a game with a near infinite amount of choices.
Monster Hunter Wilds
Hunt Your Way and In Style
Monster Hunter Wilds
- Released
- February 28, 2025
Monster Hunter Wilds, and the series as a whole, gives players a lot of choice when it comes to hunting down monsters for sport and protection. Players can choose between one of the fourteen weapon types, like the bow or insect glaive, and if that weapon doesn’t feel right, players can switch as much as they want during the campaign.
Based on materials and monster parts gathered in the world, players can make new weapons and armor, which will eventually unlock transmogrification to fully open up customization. Also, players can design their character and their Palico before and after starting.
Skylanders: Imaginators
Diablo Babies
Skylanders: Imaginators

- October 13, 2016
Skylanders: Imaginators is the last main console game in the popular toys-to-life series. The series went out with a bang at least, because even though it still used figures players had to buy at stores, once they added them into the game, their looks could be changed. It's also notable for adding Crash Bandicoot characters to the series.
Players could swap out almost every body part imaginable or change their aspects, and it was a loot-based game like Diablo, too, so gear dropped constantly. It was the perfect top-down action RPG for newer or younger players to help ease them into the genre.
The Sims 4
Customize Everything and Make the Sim You Want
The Sims 4
- Released
- September 2, 2014
- ESRB
- T for Teen: Crude Humor, Sexual Themes, Violence
- Genre(s)
- Simulation
The Sims started with many ways for players to live out their virtual lives, whether they wanted to start a family or be a weird killer who lured in the neighborhood. The Sims 4 is the latest main entry in the series, with even more options for players to live out their fantasies.
Of course, murdering people is not the goal, but it is funny to watch characters get stuck in rooms and babble weird Simlish. Dark thoughts aside, from character creation to side hustles to building a home, The Sims 4 has options and DLC packs for days. In essence, it's the ultimate customization game.
Most Legendary Final Boss Fights In RPGs
After hundreds of hours, these final bosses tested the very limits of the skills of players.
