The survival genre is not for everyone, as it requires tons of patience, and a willingness to farm and manage various resources in order to prevent starvation, dehydration, and even succumbing to world threats, such as other people, monsters, or even wild animals. Many survival games have players interacting with other people to trade valuable items or simply to have conversations and stay sane.
8 Best Survival Colony Sim Games, Ranked
This great selection of games will provide players with the most engaging survival colony simulators to entertain them and their virtual community.
However, many survival titles don't afford players the same courtesy and leave them stranded in desolate locations with no other people to interact with. Some players would argue that these are the best kind of survival games, as they pit the main character against a vast and hostile world meant only for the fittest. Here are some games where players are the only person in the world.

While at first, the planet looks like it's never fostered life, as players explore, they'll start to notice that there are, in fact, many structures that couldn't have been created naturally, suggesting the existence of life on the planet at some point.
The Solus Project forces players to face a reality where they're the only survivors of their scouting crew, and are now left alone wandering the surface of the planet they crashed into to explore the remnants of an ancient civilization that is long gone.

7 Best Horror & Survival Horror Games Where You Play As A Cop
From Leon Kennedy to Saga Anderson, different games have allowed gamers to experience terrors from the perspective of law enforcers.
While it seems like there are other humans on planet 4546B, there's no guarantee that the distress signal is recent, or that any of the senders are still alive. This means that there's a big possibility that players are the sole human survivors on the planet, making for a lonely, yet very entertaining experience. Along with having to deal with the common survival challenges that most games present, players will also have to be on the lookout for planet 4546B's dangerous maritime creatures, which make Earth's most fearsome ocean-dwellers look like puppies.
3 The Last Guardian
An Old Man's Tale About His Youth And His Giant Best Friend
The Last Guardian
- Released
- December 6, 2016
- Developer(s)
- JapanStudio, GenDesign
- Platform(s)
- PlayStation 4
- The game has many elements reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus
- Trico and the Boy can interact to progress through the game
The Last Guardian is an amazing game that combines action-adventure and puzzle-solving elements into a wonderful experience that is heavily reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus. Players take control of a boy who can use his environment to move undetected and prey on many of the game's enemies. During the story, players will come across Trico, a massive mythological beast that they can interact with and ride to progress through the game and get some degree of companionship.
The story of The Last Guardian begins with an old man as he reminisces on the adventures he had in his youth alongside his griffin-like companion, which means that the game is told from a memory perspective that relies on flashbacks of the old man's life. All in all, this game is another great title developed by Team Ico, with various game mechanics similar to the Shadow of the Colossus franchise that players will enjoy. While there don't seem to be other humans during the Boy's youth, Trico offers enough companionship to make the gaming experience feel daunting but not lonely.
2 The Witness
Puzzle-Solving Is Key To Dealing With The Loneliness Of Being The Only Human Around
The Witness
- Players must solve puzzles throughout the game
- The Witness is set on a beautiful tropical island
Few survival games have worlds as beautifully crafted as The Witness. In this game, you're the sole human inhabitant of a deserted island full of colorful trees, a vast thriving ocean, and grass that's so green, that it seems artificial. After the main character emerges from an underground bunker, their job will be to explore the island they're on, which has many structures and natural formations. The Witness features a considerably ample map with 11 different regions, each with its own vegetation and puzzles. While some puzzles are mandatory to progress through the game, others are optional, giving players a lot of freedom regarding what challenges they want to take on.
8 Best Survival Games For Building A Community
Surviving deadly weather conditions or man-eating beasts is easier with a group of friends than alone.
While it's unknown whether there are other people in the world outside the island, it's painfully clear that players are the only humans in a 100-mile radius, making for a lonely experience that's reminiscent of the movie Castaway. The bright side is that, as opposed to other survival games where players are also isolated, at least The Witness is set on a beautiful tropical island, which might help make being alone feel more like a permanent vacation rather than an unfortunate situation.
1 Everybody's Gone To The Rapture
Players Get To Experience The Vanishing Of Humanity
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture
- Released
- August 11, 2015
- Platform(s)
- PC, PlayStation 4
- Developer
- The Chinese Room, SCE Santa Monica Studio
- Genre(s)
- Adventure
- Set in a village where its inhabitants are slowly disappearing and turning into pure light
- Beautiful area design and great exploration mechanics (aside from the slow walking pace)
Set in 1984 in the fictional village of Yaughton, England, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture tells the story of six different characters as the people around them start disappearing and turning into figures of pure light. While the game breaks the concept of being the only person in the world, as the story progresses, more and more townspeople will vaporize into thin air. This leaves players to explore the different areas in the game as they become increasingly void of life.
While other survival games where players are the only person in the world typically start in an already deserted setting, there's something very interesting about Everybody's Gone to the Rapture's story being set right at the moment when humanity starts to vanish from the face of the Earth. This title features a vast and complex world that players can explore to discover more clues about their neighbors' disappearances, and the overall design of every area, house and park is great.
