In the near future, The Coalition will soon bring players back into Sera’s past with the upcoming releases of Gears of War: Reloaded and Gears of War: E-Day. Reloaded will introduce PlayStation audiences to the world of Gears of War this August via a remaster of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, which itself is a remaster of 2006's Gears of War 1. A release window for Gears of War: E-Day is currently unknown, but it’s expected that more information on E-Day will be announced at the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase or somewhere else in the near future as the Gears franchise nears its 20th anniversary in 2026.
While Reloaded will allow players to relive Gears of War 1 and Delta Squad’s battle against Locust General RAAM, E-Day will have players journey back 14 years before the Lightmass Offensive to witness the very beginning of the Locust War in an event known as Emergence Day. Here, gamers will play as a younger Marcus Fenix and a younger Dominic Santiago as they and the overall COG struggle to confront the Locust Horde and their monstrous Hollow creatures. With E-Day being the earliest prequel Gears game in the franchise to date, many characters from modern Gears titles will likely be absent from the game, but there are still several fan-favorite characters Gears could end up in E-Day’s campaign.
Rumor: Gears of War Reloaded Price and Physical Release Plans Leaked
Rumors begin to emerge about physical versions of Xbox's Gears of War: Reloaded remaster, as well as the game's potential pricing plans.
Which Characters Should Return in Gears of War: E-Day
Possible Returning COG Troops in E-Day
Being a prequel, it’s unlikely that characters Fenix and Santiago haven’t met directly until the events of the original Gears of War trilogy will appear in E-Day. However, this does still leave room for other COG characters to pop up, even if it’s only briefly in E-Day. For example, Colonel Victor Hoffman, Chairman Richard Prescott, and Anya Stroud will likely appear in some manner in E-Day, given their prominent roles in the COG military. Several fan-favorite COG troops could additionally appear in various forms in E-Day such as:
- Clayton Carmine
- Gabriel Diaz
- Tai Kaliso
- Lahni Kaliso
- Bernadette Mataki
- Alicia Valera
Tai Caliso is known to have served alongside Fenix early on in the war, so his appearance in E-Day would make sense and help set up the origins of the Mark 2 Lancer Assault Rifle.
Possible Returning Locust in E-Day
According to The Coalition, E-Day will have the Locust appear as horrifying “living nightmares," especially compared to how players quickly became accustomed to Locust Drones as simple cannon fodder in the original Gears trilogy. With this concept in mind, the Locust may not appear in major villainous roles but instead appear as simply animalistic monsters sowing chaos throughout Sera. However, this new horrifying perspective of the Locust could still have some iconic Locust leaders appear in E-Day, such as Skorge and RAAM, the latter of which led the initial invasion of the surface on Emergence Day. While Fenix and Santiago may not confront these two Locust leaders directly, they could still view their carnage from afar or witness them slaying a few of their allies.
Potential Gears Book Characters in E-Day
Since Emergence Day has seldom been depicted in Gears games, most of what is known about the early days of the Locust War is from Gears' expanded media, primarily novels and comics. Gears of War: E-Day could then prove to be the perfect opportunity for some book-exclusive characters to make their grand debut in a Gears campaign for the first time. For example, if E-Day does showcase some parts of the Pendulum Wars, Carlos Santiago could appear as an inspiration for Fenix and a catalyst for Fenix’s future friendship with Carlos’ younger brother Dominic. Similarly, E-Day could have Locust General Sraak as an antagonist, as he perished shortly after Emergence Day’s initial invasion at the First Battle of Jannermont.
Most prominent Gears of War characters will likely appear in Gears of War: E-Day’s multiplayer, similar to how long-deceased characters appeared in Gears 5’ multiplayer, but most of them likely won’t appear in E-Day’s main campaign.
