The Coalition has shared some additional information about the storyline of Gears of War: E-Day, the next mainline installment in the titular third-person shooter franchise. As exciting as its reveal trailer was, there have been some lingering questions surrounding Gears of War: E-Day's plot and the direction the developers will take, but The Coalition has lately been providing clarification on what fans can expect from the upcoming title.

The 2024 Xbox Games Showcase was filled with exciting reveals, like Doom: The Dark Ages and South of Midnight, but one of the announcements that caught the most attention was the unveiling of Gears of War: E-Day. With the last major title in the series being released in 2019, the GoW franchise had gone quiet for several years, leading many to wonder what exactly was going on with the IP. Many believed that Gears 6 would be the next game in the series, while others surmised that a potential Halo: MCC-style Marcus Fenix Collection could be in the works. To the surprise of many, GoW developer The Coalition's next project wasn't either of those games and was instead a Gears of War prequel set during Emergence Day, the apocalyptic event that took place 14 years before the first entry in the franchise.

A Gears of War prequel in the vein of Halo: Reach was the last thing that most expected and, although its announcement was exciting, many questions were left unanswered. As such, a lead developer from The Coalition, creative director Matt Sercy, decided to set the record straight by providing some additional details about Gears of War: E-Day's storyline. Speaking in an interview with GamesRadar+, Sercy revealed that GoW: E-Day will take place across "multiple days" instead of just 24 hours, but that the game will primarily focus on the catastrophic Locust Horde invasion that kicked off the events of the franchise.

Gears of War: E-Day Will Let Players Experience Emergence Day Through The Characters' Eyes

Though Gears of War: E-Day's subtitle does emphasize that the game is centered around the titular event in question, Sercy did make sure to note that the game is also about sticking with GoW's cast of characters "from the moment...[E-Day] happens. Players will be with them every minute, through the days that play out of the city...really experiencing it through their eyes, both what's happening to them, and also what's happening to the city around them, the people around them, the other characters."

In another interview, Matt Sercy also revealed that Gears of War: E-Day will bring horror back to the franchise by making the Locust feel like an army of menacing, scary monsters. This, combined with confirmation from The Coalition that E-Day will be strictly linear instead of open-world, sounds like just the thing that Gears fans have wanted the series to return to. Hopefully, Gears of War: E-Day will live up to the hype when it's released sometime within the next few years.
