Ever since 343 Industries and Xbox Game Studios released Halo: The Master Chief Collection in 2014, fans of Xbox’s second most popular exclusive games franchise, Gears of War, have called for Xbox to release a similar compilation for the third-person shooter series. Based on Halo: MCC initially encompassing only games with Master Chief as the protagonist, Gears of War fans pitched their compilation game to be titled Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection. While The Coalition has remade Gears of War 1 into 2015’s Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and the upcoming Gears of War: Reloaded, there’s still a lot of potential for a Marcus Fenix Collection to debut in the near future.

Gears of War: Reloaded marks the franchise's arrival on Xbox's competing platform, and this could be a sign of what's to come for E-Day.

The History of Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection Rumors

Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection has never been officially announced or even given an official title. While fans began to speculate about the potential release of a remastered compilation of the Gears of War original trilogy, especially around Gears of War 2 and 3’s 10th anniversaries in 2018 and 2021, The Coalition or Xbox have never made official remarks on a Gears of War compilation title. Instead, The Coalition continued moving forward in developing Gears of War sequels and spin-offs in the form of 2016’s Gears of War 4, 2019’s Gears Pop! And Gears 5, and 2020’s Gears Tactics.

However, in the five years since Gears Tactics’ debut, rumors of The Coalition developing a compilation of the original Gears of War trilogy began to appear frequently. In 2022, Xbox Era podcast host Nick Baker and The Verge's Tom Warren hinted that a Gears of War compilation would soon be released. Baker later affirmed in 2023 that more Gears remasters were in the works but didn’t reveal his sources or further details. In early 2025, Head of Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer began playing Gears of War 2 and 3 prompting many fans to speculate this was leading to announcements of the games’ remasters. Spencer later explained that he was simply showing off the games to a friend who had never played Gears.

PlayStation 5 Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection Rumors

In recent years, Microsoft has begun slowly porting over its most exclusive franchises to rival PlayStation platforms, such as Forza Horizon 5 being released on the PlayStation 5 in late April 2025. This trend was seemingly expected to continue when leakers and industry insiders extas1s and DetectiveSeeds suggested that a remastered collection of the original Gears of War trilogy would be announced at the June 2025 Xbox Games Showcase for both Xbox and PlayStation platforms. However, this rumored collection would reportedly not include any PVP multiplayer. Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection could still possibly be announced at the upcoming showcase, but if their details are right, it’s likely extas1s and DetectiveSeeds’ information was about the recently announced Gears of War: Reloaded for PS5 instead.

The Coalition did briefly work on a remaster of Gears of War 2 around 2015, according to 3D models for the Riftworm’s interior created by environmental artist Ayi Sanchez, but the project was canceled to focus more on multiplayer development.

How a Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection Could Work

In light of the recent announcement and upcoming release of Gears of War: Reloaded in August for Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, a Marcus Fenix Collection may not release this year, if it’s in development at all. With Gears of War: E-Day expected to be the next Gears game to release after Reloaded, likely in late 2025 or sometime in 2026, a Marcus Fenix Collection could possibly be released after E-Day. If both Reloaded and E-Day sell well on Xbox and PlayStation platforms, this could motivate Microsoft to greenlight The Coalition and possibly another developer to begin working on remastering Gears of War 2 and 3 for a compilation to catch PlayStation and PC players up in the series.

Using Halo: The Master Chief Collection as a reference, a Marcus Fenix Collection could feature both remastered campaigns and multiplayers of Gears of War 1, 2, and 3, complete with all DLC and potentially new lore content akin to Halo’s terminals. Each game’s multiplayer progression could be updated and streamlined to unlock cosmetics for all three games and The Coalition could potentially release new character and weapon skins for multiplayer similar to Halo: MCC’s Fractures armor. If the Marcus Fenix Collection is released on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, it could also feature seamless multiplayer crossplay between platforms, allowing for friends to easily play together no matter what system they own.

The Potential for a Marcus Fenix Collection to Include Sequels and Spin-Offs

While most rumors and fan pitches of a Marcus Fenix Collection have only included the original Gears of War trilogy, there is potential for The Coalition to include Gears of War: Judgment, Gears of War 4, and Gears 5 in the compilation as well. Marcus Fenix does appear in those three games and all three are getting old enough to earn a slight remaster at least, with Judgment 12 years old, 4 being nine years old, and 5 being six years old. Including Judgment and the sequels in a Marcus Fenix Collection could help all players and Gears fans easily catch up on all major events in the series and help prepare everyone for the inevitable release of Gears of War 6.
