Gears of War: Reloaded players are calling out an unpopular change made to the UI in the remake of the classic game, with both gameplay and visual complaints. The remaster of the original Gears of War served as a particularly notable entry into the franchise, for more reasons than just the return of the iconic shooter. The launch of Gears of War Reloaded saw the franchise's first-ever release on a non-Xbox console, debuting on the PS5 alongside the PC and Xbox Series X/S. However, one particular aspect of the remake is receiving notable criticism from fans.

The highly-anticipated launch of Gears of War Reloaded has been a mixed bag for many fans, both seeing sales success and fan criticism. Gears of War Reloaded reached 1 million players on the newly-released remaster just a few days after its launch, buoyed both by the series' debut on PS5 and being a Day 1 title on Game Pass. The PC port of Gears of War Reloaded, however, has not been nearly as pleasant, with the game receiving mixed reviews for its frequent crashes, lack of split-screen co-op, and other issues. Fans are now bringing one more major issue with Gears of War Reloaded to light.

A video shared to the Gears of War subreddit by "Chronophobe Loser" is pointing out several issues with the game's UI, particularly its kill notifications. The post highlights several issues with the notification message for kills, particularly the black box around the kill feed that they call out as "unnecessary visual clutter." The post also notes some gameplay issues that could arise from the black box, potentially reducing visibility in key moments of a match. The post compares the notification with the original Gears of War as well, positioned at the bottom-left of the screen.

Gears of War: Reloaded Fans Are Unhappy About UI Change

The UI criticism for Gears of War Reloaded was met with a variety of alternative solutions, as well as some justification for the new kill feed. One fan suggested that the black box could use a more transparent color, allowing players to see through the box for better visibility in combat. Another fan also commented on the potential reasoning behind the opaque kill notification, suggesting it makes kills clearer for players with poor vision. Many fans also suggested that the game has much larger issues to deal with, including problems with Gears of War: Reloaded's matchmaking and networking.

Blasting a Locust from cover in Gears of War Reloaded

Gears of War: Reloaded's high-profile launch comes as the beloved franchise has another major release on the way. The Coalition officially announced Gears of War: E-Day last year, with the newest entry in the series scheduled to launch sometime in 2026. The game is said to focus on the origins of beloved Gears of War protagonist Marcus Fenix, set at the time of the emergence of the Locust Horde. Between the remaster of the franchise's first game and a brand-new entry on the way soon, Gears of War looks to be making a major resurgence.
