Natlan in Genshin Impact has unique mechanics with terms that sound new to many Travelers’ ears. Two of these new systems are the core of Natlan’s exploration, Nightsoul and Phlogiston. Phlogiston is only one simple thing, whereas Nightsoul is the core concept of several systems.
It’s easy to misunderstand things since these arrangements are not the most obvious to interpret, so if players wish to fully understand these new Natlan mechanics in Genshin Impact, this article will explain what you need to know.

Phlogiston & Nightsoul Point Mechanics In Genshin Impact
The red bar above your HP bar while traveling in Natlan is called Phlogiston. It’s not a "heat bar" like the coldness you accumulate in Genshin Impact Dragonspine. Instead, having this red bar is a good thing.
Phlogiston is like an extra energy/stamina bar for Natlan-related explorations. When you use a Saurian power or a Natlan character’s Skills, you’ll consume an energy called Nightsoul points.
Once you run out of Nightsoul points, you can continue using the Saurian or character’s Skills, until the Phlogiston runs out as well. This means you can surf with Maulani far longer in Natlan thanks to Phlogiston’s extra energy bar.
How To Get Phlogiston Red Energy In Genshin Impact
Practically everything in Natlan generates Phlogiston when you interact with them. For example:
- Activating Everflame Seed (a round stone with red orbs inside it)
- Collecting Flaming Seed of Phlogiston (little red orbs in the open world)
- Harvesting Candlecap Mushrooms and Flamegranates
- Catching Crystal Beetles and Pyro Crystalfly
- Destroying Phlogiston Piles and Explosive Barrels
- Reaching a Teleport Waypoint or Statue of the Seven
Nightsoul Mechanics In Genshin Impact
Other than Nightsoul points (stamina bar for Natlan exploration), there are three other Nightsoul mechanics in Genshin Impact:
- Nightsoul Blessing
- Nightsoul Burst
- Nightsoul Transmission
Nightsoul’s Blessing
Natlan characters can enter the Nightsoul’s Blessing state using their abilities. Typically, their Elemental Skills. Once they’re in this state, the character gains Nightsoul points, which will be consumed or restored based on usage or certain triggers.
Nightsoul Blessing is indicated by the colors around the character's models. Having Nightsoul points usually also means you're under Nightsoul's Blessings.
Nightsoul Burst
When the party has at least one character from Natlan, a team member dealing Elemental DMG will trigger Nightsoul Burst. You can see it triggering when a Natlan pattern appears on your screen.
The more characters from Natlan are in the party, the shorter the CD for this trigger. When you have 1/2/3+ characters from Natlan, the cooldown between each Burst is 18/12/9s, respectively.
Triggering Nightsoul Burst can buff Natlan characters and some equipment.
Nightsoul Transmission
Natlan is made with ease of exploration in mind. Within the areas where Phlogiston is available, Nightsoul Transmission allows you to swiftly switch characters when their avatar lights up.
Upon switching, the character will immediately use their mobility skill. For example, you can:
- Use Xianyun’s Skill to jump around, then switch to Kinich mid-air.
- Switch to Genshin Impact Kachina while climbing or sprinting.
- Immediately activate Mualani’s surf mode while swimming.
