One of the most popular free-to-play multiplayer games on PlayStation 4 — Genshin Impact — has been officially delisted from the console's PlayStation Store. This marks the first step in developer HoYoverse's plans to cease Genshin Impact operations on PS4, with further decommissioning slated for 2026.
Genshin Impact first launched in 2020 on PC, PS4, and mobile platforms, and didn't take long to become a global phenomenon. Evidently, Genshin Impact was initially a PS4 console exclusive, which helped build a millions-strong userbase for the live-service open-world RPG on PlayStation. In 2021, HoYoverse brought Genshin Impact to PS5 natively, and the game made its Xbox Series X/S debut in 2024. With Genshin Impact now on most current-gen systems, HoYoverse recently confirmed that it was ready to leave the 12-year-old PS4 behind.

New Genshin Impact PS4 Downloads are No Longer Possible
The decision to end further development of Genshin Impact on PS4 stemmed from limitations pertaining to "hardware performance and platform application size," as per HoYoverse, which implies that the developer may have ambitious future updates in mind that the aging PlayStation system could struggle with. Now, starting today, September 10, Genshin Impact has been entirely removed from the PlayStation Store on PS4. That means any PS4 user who doesn't have Genshin Impact in their digital library can no longer access or download the game.
Existing Genshin Impact players still have some time left to enjoy the game on PS4, but changes are on the horizon. HoYoverse will disable in-game purchases for Genshin Impact on PS4 from February 25, 2026, onwards, cutting players off from the gacha-driven microtransactions that are central to the game's progression system. Then, April 8, 2026, will mark the full discontinuation of PS4 support for Genshin Impact — no new updates from there on out — and users won't be able to log in at all. For current Genshin Impact PS4 players, HoYoverse strongly encourages binding accounts and preparing to migrate to a new platform, like the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, or mobile.
While Genshin Impact's looming PS4 shutdown is unfortunate for users of the Sony system, it should be noted that these plans will come to fruition in year six of the PS5 generation and likely enable HoYoverse to deliver bigger, more technically grand updates for the game. Many other studios have moved on from the PS4 and Xbox One, including the upcoming current-gen-only Battlefield 6, and it was only a matter of time until Genshin Impact would do the same. Moreover, PS5 sales were recently announced to have crossed 80 million units, so the newer console's adoption is clearly reaching a point where lots of developers are comfortable dropping previous-gen systems.
