With the release of the 5.0 update in Genshin Impact, players are treated to an exciting new quality-of-life feature that allows for greater customization of artifacts. This update introduces the ability to craft artifacts with a desired main stat and two selected sub-stats, offering players more control over their character builds. The function is quite similar to the already existing way of obtaining desired relics in Honkai: Star Rail and Discs in Zenless Zone Zero, however is further enhanced by the ability to be able to choose 2 of the sub-stats alongside the main stat.

Acquiring the Retrieve the Scattered, Escaping Colors achievement will reward players with 1 Luxurious and two Precious chests in Genshin Impact
However, this feature comes with limitations, as it relies on a new item called Sanctifying Elixir. This guide will walk players through how to make the most of this feature, ensuring they optimize artifacts effectively within the constraints of this new system in Genshin Impact.
How to Use Sanctifying Elixir
Sanctifying Elixir is a consumable item required for crafting artifacts in Genshin Impact. Unlike the Artifact Strongboxes obtained through the Crafting Bench, Sanctifying Elixir allows players to select their desired artifact piece from a set, as well as its main stat and two of its sub-stats. While this reduces the RNG involved in obtaining the right artifact, the other stats and the upgrades to those stats remain random. Furthermore, this function allows players to choose even the newer artifact sets, unlike the Artifact Strongboxes, that are typically many patches behind. Therefore, it’s recommended that players use this feature strategically.
To use Sanctifying Elixir, players first need to obtain an item called the Artifact Transmuter from the Embattle section of the Adventurer's Handbook, which becomes available after acquiring at least 25 five-star artifacts. Since this requirement includes artifacts leveled before the version update, players who have been playing for a while can obtain this item immediately. The Artifact Transmuter can be found in the Gadgets section of the inventory and can be used freely in any location, without needing to visit a crafting bench.
When activated, the Artifact Transmuter opens a new interface, allowing players to choose the desired artifact set, piece, and definable main and sub-stats, along with displaying the amount of Sanctifying Elixirs the player currently owns. The next tab provides access to the Artifact Extraction screen.
The number of Sanctifying Elixirs required to define an artifact varies depending on the artifact piece. The details are as follows:

Given that Goblet pieces are often the most challenging to obtain with the ideal main stat and sub-stat combination, it's advisable for players to reserve their Sanctifying Elixirs for crafting Goblets, even though they require the highest amount of Elixirs. Alternatively, using Sanctifying Elixirs for Circlet or Sands pieces is also a viable strategy, as their main stats can be equally difficult to obtain. However, it is generally not recommended to use Sanctifying Elixirs on Flower or Feather pieces since these have fixed main stats and are easier to obtain with the desired sub-stats through normal means.
How to Obtain Sanctifying Elixir
Sanctifying Elixir is not an abundant resource in Genshin Impact, as there are only a few consistent methods of obtaining it, all of which are quite limited. The four known ways to acquire Sanctifying Elixir include:
Artifact Extraction
On the second tab of the Artifact Transmuter, players will find the Artifact Extraction option, which allows them to exchange artifacts for Sanctifying Elixirs. Players can trade in 100 points' worth of artifacts to receive one Sanctifying Elixir. The points awarded depend on the level of the 5-star artifacts used:
- Level 4-11: Points equal to the artifact level.
- Level 12-15: Artifact level +2 points.
- Level 16-19: Artifact level +6 points.
- Level 20: 30 points.
While higher-level artifacts yield more points, leveling artifacts solely for extraction is more efficient if kept at lower levels. However, fully leveled, but unused artifacts are still viable for extraction.
Currently, players can only obtain one Sanctifying Elixir per version update through this method. Given this limitation, it's crucial to use this method each patch. Since Sanctifying Elixirs do not expire, it's wise to save them until they are truly needed.
Battle Pass
Players can obtain an additional Sanctifying Elixir by reaching level 26 in the version's Battle Pass, provided they have unlocked the Gnostic Hymn. This offers a consistent way to gain one more Sanctifying Elixir each patch. However, it's important to note that this option is only available to players who purchase the Gnostic Hymn, making it inaccessible to those who play purely for free.
Event Rewards
Players may also obtain an additional Sanctifying Elixir through special in-game events. However, it is currently unclear if this item will be consistently provided in future version updates. During the 5.0 update, which coincides with Genshin Impact's 4th anniversary, players will be able to obtain one Sanctifying Elixir as part of the Anniversary Benefits, delivered through in-game mail.
Exploring Natlan
Certain treasure locations in Natlan are also known to provide Sanctifying Elixirs. As of now the spots where players can find them are the Tribal Secret Spaces for each 3 tribes. Therefore, it’s recommended that players prioritize exploring Natlan thoroughly. Doing so not only increases the chances of finding Sanctifying Elixirs but also allows players to gather other valuable resources, such as Primogems, through their explorations. Unfortunately however, this is not a repeatable / consistent way of obtaining Sanctifying Elixirs. As of now, players can obtain 3 Sanctifying Elixirs through Natlan exploration.
