Player Mistakes

Back to All Characters

Genshin Impact's latest region, Fontaine, is introducing new characters with unique abilities, offering players fresh gameplay mechanics and strategies to enhance their gaming experience. One such character added in the version 4.1 update is Wriothesley, the Duke of the Fortress of Meropide.

Genshin Impact: 6 Mistakes Players Make When Using Neuvillette

Neuvillette's Charged Attack is fun and powerful, but there are many mistakes Genshin Impact players may make when using it.

Wriothesley has been one of the most eagerly anticipated characters since the release of the Fontaine teaser. This anticipation stems not only from his striking appearance and captivating personality, as revealed during the events of Acts 3 and 4 in Fontaine's Archon quest but also because Wriothesley is the game's first Cryo catalyst user in Genshin Impact. Given these factors, expectations for his gameplay potential are exceptionally high. However, players need to pay attention to specific aspects of his kit to ensure they can utilize him effectively.

6 Not Prioritizing Normal Attacks

Unlike Neuvillette, another recently introduced catalyst user, Wriothesley doesn't rely solely on charged attacks for damage. Instead, Wriothesley's kit provides him with a 5-hit combo for his normal attacks, in addition to his charged attacks, which play a crucial role in increasing his primary damage output. Moreover, upon using his Elemental Skill, Wriothesley enters a state where his normal attacks are enhanced, enabling him to deal even more damage.

There are a handful of great Cryo users in Genshin Impact. Here's a look at all of them.

However, this doesn't imply that Wriothesley should neglect charged attacks, as they can also be enhanced and should be utilized whenever possible to take advantage of their benefits, such as healing or dealing increased damage without stamina consumption.

5 Not Moving Mid-combo

Genshin Impact Wriothesley

Unlike many characters who interrupt their combos when they move or use their Elemental Skill, Wriothesley's combo-hit count persists and can be continued after he sprints or uses his Elemental Skill. This provides players with greater flexibility to adapt to enemy positioning or use the Elemental Skill cooldown effectively. Consequently, players don't need to be as rigid in optimizing his 5-hit combo rotation compared to some other characters, although they should still be mindful of avoiding interruptions through other means.

4 Not Knowing His Arkhe Ability

As with all other characters from Fontaine, Wriothesley also possesses an Arkhe ability, which can be quite helpful during exploration or defeating certain enemies. In Wriothesley's case, his Arkhe is Ousia aligned, and it can be activated by utilizing his Elemental Burst only unless he's underwater. Consequently, Wriothesley will deal Ousia-based damage called Surging Blade right after his Elemental Burst ends. Interestingly, while the cooldown of his Elemental Burst is 15 seconds, Surging Blade's cooldown is 10 seconds, similar to the cooldown of many other characters' Arkhe abilities. Unfortunately, he may not be able to use it as often as possible due to not having access to his Elemental Burst as frequently.

3 Focusing on His Burst Too Much

Wriothesley Ascension Materials

Some characters gain great benefits from upgrading or using their Elemental Burst as often as possible because they may add additional benefits, while for some characters, it is only to deal some added damage. Wriothesley certainly falls into the second category. While Wriothesley has quite a low Energy cost at 60 Energy, and his Burst can be utilized whenever it is available freely, players shouldn't be particularly building him with Energy Recharge or prioritizing his Elemental Burst for talent upgrades over his Normal Attack or Skill. Doing so would be wasteful in terms of resources and would prevent players from maximizing his damage output. However, players can still utilize his Elemental Burst when it becomes available, even though it won't be available for every rotation for most instances.

2 Not Paying Attention to His HP

Genshin Impact Sigewinne Wriothesley

While Wriothesley scales with ATK for his damage output, his kit, like many other Fontaine characters, also involves an HP drain and gain mechanic. During his enhanced normal attack combo after using his skill, Wriothesley will drain a small percentage of his HP. As it's percentage-based, players don't really need to stack up HP, but they will still need to pay attention to how much HP he has remaining.

Genshin Impact: Subdetection Unit Location

Subdetection Unit is a unique local specialty in Genshin Impact that reacts when it gets hit.

This is because Wriothesley needs to balance his HP, keeping it above 50% to be able to deal enhanced normal attacks after using his skill. If he is below 60%, he can simply heal 30% of his max HP by using charged attacks as well. Maintaining this HP balance is relatively easy for Wriothesley to do on his own, but utilizing a shield or healer character can still be quite beneficial to compensate against potentially strong hits from enemies.

1 Not Positioning Him Right

Genshin Impact - Wriothesley Punch

For the most part, Catalyst users in Genshin Impact prefer mid or long-range combat, with the exception of Heizou and now, Wriothesley as well. Similar to Heizou, Wriothesley's animations are melee-based, this time using boxing instead of kicks. This means that Wriothesley will need to engage in close combat.

Additionally, his attacks are single-target oriented due to their short range. Therefore, positioning him correctly and swapping between enemies if necessary by utilizing sprints, etc., becomes quite valuable, especially if he is used in a Freeze hypercarry combo to ensure all enemies remain frozen in close proximity to each other.
