Genshin Impact's latest Special Announcement Event outlined tons of new content coming to the game in the 4.6 update. After the update is live on April 23rd or 24th (depending on the player's region), players can access the second chapter in Cyno's story, Lupus Aureus Chapter 2. The trailer for this version of Genshin Impact, titled "Two Worlds Aflame, the Crimson Night Fades" teased a battle between Cyno and a mysterious new character called Sethos.
Sethos had been rumored to be a part of this update, but the exact nature of his relationship with Cyno was unclear. From what was glimpsed through the 4.6 trailer, it appears as if Cyno and Sethos are connected through a great sage from Sumeru's past. Furthermore, the two are meant to fight in a ceremony called the "Rite of Duels."
Sethos Could Be The Tiger To Cyno's Wolf
Cyno
Cyno is the Sumeru region's five-star Electro claymore user and the General Mahamatra of the Akademiya. He is a rather mysterious character who takes his job as head of the Akademiya's police force very seriously. That said, he has (infamously) been known to crack terrible jokes while playing Genius Invokation, the turn-based PvP card game in Genshin Impact. His powers and the headdress that he wears follow a wolf motif; his constellation "Lupus Aureus" translates to "Golden Wolf."
Sethos
Initial rumors about Sethos featured art that depicted him with cat ears and a tail with blue and white clothing. Leakers were correct about his name, but far off the mark when it came to Sethos' overall aesthetic. He has dark brown hair and brilliant green eyes and wears a golden scarf. Some fans, like WorldImpact on X, have compared his appearance to that of the Rishboland Tigers that are native to Sumeru, even if he does not have ears or a tail.
Rumors had also implied that he would be an Anemo character, but the trailer instead suggests that Sethos is an Electro user just like Cyno. It is as-yet unknown when Sethos will become available to players, but his design and importance to Cyno's plot all suggest that he will be on a Wish Banner in the future. Considering the fact that Sethos seems to covet Cyno's powers, it will be interesting to discover what this new character is capable of on his own.
Cyno's powers, and his connection to the sage Hermanubis, seem to be at the center of the conflict between these two characters. In the trailer a voice says, "Cyno was chosen, but he was not the only one..." This suggests that Sethos could have also gained the same kind of powers that Cyno exhibits. Perhaps the aforementioned Rite of Duels determines who can wield the power of Hermanubis.
The Wisdom of Hermanubis Could Be Cyno's Secret Power
A statue of a towering jackal-headed man is featured prominently throughout the trailer. This is Hermanubis, a great sage from the days that King Deshret ruled over the deserts of Sumeru. In the game, it is said that Cyno channels the power of Hermanubis and that he was possibly raised by a sect of Hermanubis priests. This was mentioned by Lisa, who once studied at the Akademiya and is thus familiar with the General Mahamatra, during the 2023 Windblume Festival event. Cyno replied to Lisa that "the priest's power" no longer brings him suffering.
In Genshin Impact, Hermanubis refers to a sage that once advised King Deshret. In real life, Hermanubis is the name of a Greco-Egyptian god closely associated with the underworld, priestly orders, and the truth.
With this in mind, it can be inferred that Sethos is also connected to the worship of King Deshret and Hermanubis and wants to claim the great sage's power as his own. In the trailer, Sethos says, "The wisdom of Hermanubis would have been ours." It is possible, then, that if Cyno looses this duel, his wolfish Electro powers will be transferred to Sethos.
The second chapter in Cyno's story will elaborate on Cyno's past and Sethos' place in it. It is unknown whether they will end up as bitter enemies or as friends when Cyno's story quest, Lupus Aureus Chapter 2, comes to a close. Players will be able to unravel the mystery around this new character and his apparent problem with Cyno when the 4.6 patch is made available.
