A Gex Trilogy from Limited Run Games is set to bring the classic games to modern platforms later this year. The Gex games were originally available on the PlayStation and N64, but Limited Run Games is ensuring that modern audiences can get their hands on them soon too.

Gex is a trilogy of games from the '90s that focuses on a secret agent gecko played by Dana Gould in North America, Leslie Phillips in Europe, and Mitsuo Senda in Japan. The wise-cracking character binged TV and would enter the worlds of the shows to collect remotes to complete each area and eventually defeat the antagonist, Rez. These games provided a unique take on 3D platformers at the time with an edgy plot akin to Conker's Bad Fur Day. Since the release of Yooka-Laylee and the return of Glover, some gamers have anticipated a revamp of the original Gex games. Fulfilling the hopes of some fans, Limited Run Games has confirmed that it's working on porting the Gex Trilogy to modern hardware.

The Limited Run Games Twitter account recently shared a video focusing on the classic Gex trilogy, with a final screen highlighting an upcoming release. The clip highlights some of the best moments from the three main titles, with the Game Boy Color games notably absent. According to the clip, preorders for the Gex Trilogy will open in Fall 2024, with a subsequent release to follow. The trilogy will be dropped on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. Beyond Limited Run Games, the video hints that Carbon Engine and Square Enix are working to make this release happen. Given that no official launch date has been confirmed, another announcement may reveal when players can get their hands on the classic games.

When Does the Gex Trilogy Come Out?

While the video only confirms that the trilogy is coming later this year, it'll likely be released in the winter given that the preorders are unavailable until the fall. As Yooka-Laylee and Lucky's Tale proved that 3D platformers are still popular with a portion of the community, it may receive plenty of preorders. The console and Steam release of the Gex Trilogy may help the games achieve similar, or greater, success to the originals. The developer of the first games, Crystal Dynamics, hasn't been confirmed to be part of the team modernizing the trilogy, but the studio remains active to this day. Crystal Dynamics is currently working on Perfect Dark which was recently shown off during a recent Xbox Games Showcase.

Limited Run Games is known for bringing classic games to modern consoles, and that's no different with the Gex Trilogy. With the Gex series dormant for so long, some players wondered if it would ever re-appear.
