Summary

  • Ghost of Tsushima 2 is likely in development, but it may not be revealed in 2024 due to Sony's release strategy, which will see no major exclusives releasing before March 2025.
  • Though fans eagerly await news on the sequel, another reason Sucker Punch may hold off on revealing Ghost of Tsushima 2 is to avoid being overshadowed.
  • With games like Rise of the Ronin and Assassin's Creed: Codename Red on the horizon, similar games will be prevalent in 2024, Ghost of Tsushima 2's release date (and by extension, its reveal) remains uncertain.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 has yet to be formally revealed, despite the near-constant and hope-filled rumors surrounding it. Even so, Sucker Punch likely knows it would be thoroughly disappointing fans of Ghost of Tsushima while simultaneously leaving money on the table if it didn't develop a sequel to one of 2020's best games, so Ghost of Tsushima 2's development is arguably all but officially confirmed. The only question is when it might be released, and before that, when it could be revealed.

Despite persistent hopes that Ghost of Tsushima 2 could be revealed this year, it seems more unlikely by the day. This is largely due to the fact that not even a shred of official evidence has confirmed it is even in development. However, other things may factor in as well — specifically, some news shared by Sony about major PlayStation exclusives and the competition Ghost of Tsushima 2 faces in a couple of 2024's upcoming games.

Why Ghost of Tsushima 2 Probably Won't Exactly Be 'Ghost of Tsushima 2'

The ending of Ghost of Tsushima leaves the title of Ghost of Tsushima 2 up in the air, specifically when it comes to where Jin may end up in a sequel.

Why Ghost of Tsushima 2 Probably Won't Be Revealed in 2024

Sony Is Holding Off on Major IP Exclusives Until 2025

During its fiscal year 2023 Q3 earnings briefing, Sony stated that it would hold off on releasing "any new major existing franchise titles next fiscal year." As the company's fiscal year doesn't end until March 31, 2025, this means Ghost of Tsushima 2 won't see the light of day until at least April 2025. As such, that means it's highly unlikely to be revealed anytime soon, especially with 2024 already presenting Ghost of Tsushima 2 with plenty of unavoidable competition.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 Already Has Plenty of Competition in 2024

Another of the most obvious reasons there may not be a Ghost of Tsushima 2 reveal in 2024 is due to the competition it now faces in other, similar games. For example, Team Ninja's Rise of the Ronin has been relentlessly compared to Ghost of Tsushima from the time of its initial reveal. Both games are set in feudal Japan and Rise of the Ronin appears to have combat mechanics similar to Ghost of Tsushima's, though its Assassin's Creed-like platforming certainly sets it apart. It may not make much sense for Sucker Punch to reveal Ghost of Tsushima 2 this year, especially anytime close to Rise of the Ronin's release.

...Ghost of Tsushima 2 won't see the light of day until at least April 2025.

There's also Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed: Codename Red to consider, which has been talked about for quite a while now. Codename Red is arguably one of the most anticipated Assassin's Creed titles in a long time, simply due to its setting being one of the longest-requested settings for the franchise. Codename Red will reportedly be set in feudal Japan, just as Ghost of Tsushima and Rise of the Ronin are. If Codename Red launches in 2024, there will be considerable competition for Ghost of Tsushima 2. Although it has only been reported through rumors and leaks, there's a possibility that Codename Red will be released sometime in late 2024. If it doesn't launch in 2024, an early 2025 release has also been suggested. Either way, it makes a potential Ghost of Tsushima 2 reveal less likely.

It could very well be that Sucker Punch ignores every reason why it shouldn't reveal Ghost of Tsushima 2 this year and chooses to reveal it anyway, even if it isn't released until 2025. However, a formal announcement might get lost in the attention garnered by other games like Rise of the Ronin and Assassin's Creed: Codename Red, assuming it releases this year. Furthermore, Sony won't be releasing any PlayStation exclusives for major existing IPs until next year, but perhaps Sucker Punch still at least announces Ghost of Tsushima 2 via a teaser trailer or something of the sort. All of this, of course, depends on whether Ghost of Tsushima 2 is indeed currently in development.
