The wait for Ghost of Yotei is finally almost over, and as its launch gets closer with each passing day, developer Sucker Punch continues to reveal more sneak peeks. Ghost of Yotei is the highly-anticipated sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, but there are a significant number of changes being made to this new chapter.

Set 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yotei introduces a brand-new protagonist, Atsu, and with her comes a variety of fresh weapons, with one of them being the mighty Odachi. Atsu's Odachi is a force to be reckoned with, and as a lover of all things greatswords, I can't wait to get my hands on it.

Ghost of Yotei's Odachi Could Quickly Become My New Favorite Video Game Weapon

A Lover of High Risk, High Reward Slashing

Over the years, the list of games I have played has grown extensive. While there are titles in almost every genre that I love, action adventure games and ARPGs are the ones I was naturally drawn to first. Because of this, I have plenty of experience with fantasy and history-based titles, which helped me find my love of using greatswords. Between the many powerful greatswords in Elden Ring and iconic weapons, like Final Fantasy VII's iconic Buster Sword, this has become one of my favorite types of weapons in gaming.

Ghost of Yotei takes place in the year 1603 at the beginning of the Edo period.

Ghost of Yotei's Odachi Mixes Power Fantasy With Grounded Realism

Sucker Punch's recent sneak peek at what playing with the odachi will be like genuinely has me pumped. As a big Ghost of Tsuhsima fan, I was excited already, but the Odachi has really sold me. In the preview, Atsu hacks her way through enemies with a precise brute force. Even just by watching the gameplay demo, I can feel how satisfying it is to make a successful hit. Greatswords are not easy to use, and while they aren't for everyone, it feels amazing when you truly get the hang of them. Usually, greatswords require players to approach combat with precision and patience, meaning timing is everything.

In real-life, I'm definitely not the strongest person out there, but greatswords allow me to feel far more physically powerful, and that may be the main reason why I gravitate toward these weapons so much. Being able to pull off using such a hefty weapon can really get the adrenaline pumping, so the sword type was easy for me to get addicted to, because it keeps me chasing that high. With each hit inflicted in the Ghost of Yotei gameplay demo, the power of the giant blade can be felt as blood splatters from every new wound. The blade itself looks almost as tall as Atsu, but the grounded gameplay seems to offer a good balance between over-the-top violence and realism.

In addition to the Odachi, Ghost of Yotei's weapons include the Katana, Dual Katana, Yari, Kusarigama, Bow and Arrow, Tanegashima Matchlock, and Quickfire Tools.

Ghost of Yotei is Right Around the Corner

  • Ghost of Yotei launches October 2.

After September unleashes its onslaught of major releases, Ghost of Yotei will be one of the first games to kick off October. Ever since the sequel was announced last year, many have been eager to find out how this brand-new chapter compares to a game as successful as Ghost of Tsushima.

It's incredibly hard to capture lightning in a bottle twice, so Ghost of Yotei can hopefully prove to be an even bigger and better version of its predecessor. Only time will tell, but as it stands, Ghost of Yotei's Odachi combat has really grabbed my attention.
