Summary
- Ghost of Yotei introduces a new protagonist named Atsu, rather than continuing the story of the first game's protagonist, Jin Sakai.
- Jin Sakai may not be the main character, but could still be included via Mythic Tales.
- Mythic Tales could retell Jin's story and grant Atsu his iconic techniques.
Ghost of Tsushima's sequel, officially titled Ghost of Yotei, has finally been revealed, alongside a brand-new protagonist for the newly established franchise, Atsu. While fans might have been waiting for a sequel that would continue the story of Jin Sakai, those dreams may come to an end in Ghost of Yotei, with it seemingly desiring to tell an original story rather than rely on the narrative it has already established through the first game's protagonist. That being said, with so little currently known about Ghost of Yotei, Jin may still have a convincing inroad to the sequel's story.
Ghost of Yotei may not feature the beloved Jin Sakai as its protagonist, but that doesn't necessarily mean he will be excluded from the game entirely. In fact, Ghost of Tsushima may already have laid the groundwork for an approach Ghost of Yotei could take to ensure Jin's story is included in its world, which would be especially useful if the sequel took Atsu down the same path as her predecessor.
What Ghost of Yotei's Setting and Year Could Mean for the Tsushima Sequel
Ghost of Yotei takes place centuries after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, which could mean several noteworthy things for its story and gameplay.
Ghost of Yotei Could Incorporate Jin's Story Through Mythic Tales
Mythic Tales Are Unique Quests That Grant Jin Powerful Abilities, Weapons, and Armor
While players may be able to unlock new abilities for Jin in Ghost of Tsushima by simply acquiring experience and then spending earned skill points in the game's various skill trees, they can also learn powerful abilities by completing Mythic Tales. These unique side quests are unlike many others in Ghost of Tsushima, granting players valuable rewards upon essentially reliving the tale of a legendary samurai. Players can initiate a Mythic Tale by approaching musicians scattered throughout Ghost of Tsushima's open world and are then led through a series of objectives that unravel the legend in bits and pieces as they progress.
Upon completing a Mythic Tale, players are rewarded with a variety of abilities, weapons, and armor that are otherwise unattainable, so they are more than worth completing. For example, by completing Mythic Tales in Ghost of Tsushima, players can learn useful combat skills like the Heavenly Strike, Dance of Wrath, and Way of the Flame techniques, all of which can turn the tide of any battle. Mythic Tales also reward players with valuable armor sets like Tadayori's Armor, Gosaku's Armor, and Kensei Armor. Finally, Ghost of Tsushima's Iki Island DLC also features two Mythic Tales, which grant players the Sakai Horse Armor and Sarugami Armor upon their completion.
Ghost of Yotei Could Feature Mythic Tales About Jin and His Journey
If Ghost of Yotei wanted to incorporate Jin's story without causing its own story to rely too heavily on him, it could utilize the first game's Mythic Tales to do so. Firstly, adding Mythic Tales to Ghost of Yotei about Jin could retell key moments of his journey to becoming the Ghost of Tsushima, perhaps even granting Atsu some of Jin's iconic techniques in the process. These could also reward players with powerful weapons and armor sets like Jin's Ghost Armor or the Sakai Katana.
Ghost of Yotei could also use Mythic Tales to tell Jin's story after Ghost of Tsushima, since the first game leaves players on quite a cliffhanger with him on the run from the shogun. This could be a unique way of continuing Jin's story without having a sequel that focuses solely on it. It would also be a credible way to establish the Ghost franchise's storytelling pattern from here on out, especially since Sucker Punch has disclosed its plans to tell original stories from now on as opposed to keeping everything focused on one character and location. It remains to be seen whether Jin's story will find its way into Ghost of Yotei, but it's likely Sucker Punch has at least considered it.
