Summary
- Ghost of Yotei surprises by introducing a new protagonist and setting 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima.
- The sequel can conclude Jin's story through historical artifacts, verbal legends, and Mythic Tales.
- Ghost of Yotei continues Ghost of Tsushima's legacy without overshadowing the new protagonist, Atsu.
Just as its predecessor was, Ghost of Yotei has proven to be a fairly sizable surprise, though not in the same way. Ghost of Tsushima was surprising on account of its unexpected success, as it went on to become one of PlayStation's best-selling exclusives after its release. Ghost of Yotei, on the other hand, is surprising due to the seemingly drastic shift its taking by choosing not to continue Jin's story from the first game and instead introducing a brand-new protagonist, whose journey takes place 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima.
Despite the fact that Ghost of Yotei won't be continuing Jin's story, however, there is still room enough for it to tie up some of Ghost of Tsushima's loose ends — though it may be more preferable for Sucker Punch to simply release a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima somewhere down the line. Jin's story in Ghost of Tsushima was largely left open-ended, even to the point of doing next to nothing with the major choice that players make at Tsushima's conclusion. Even if Ghost of Tsushima never get a sequel though, Ghost of Yotei can still conclude Jin's story in some unique ways.
How Ghost of Yotei Could Make Its Villages More Immersive Than Tsushima’s
Ghost of Tsushima's villages were one of the things that fell short in its open world, and Ghost of Yotei could improve them with a couple of changes.
How Ghost of Yotei Could Conclude Jin's Story
Ghost of Yotei Could Include Historical Artifacts or Verbal Legends That Tell Jin's Story
One approach Ghost of Yotei could take to tying up Jin's story is to tell of his exploits beyond the events of Ghost of Tsushima using historical artifacts and verbal legends. Perhaps players could find relics or writings attributed to Jin — like his armor, weapons, or personal journals — scattered throughout Ghost of Yotei's land of Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido). These artifacts could tell more about his final days and the lasting impact of his actions on Japanese history and the legacy of the Ghost.
Additionally, throughout their journey in Ghost of Yotei's Ezo, players could hear stories or songs about the "Ghost of Tsushima," which tell of Jin's exploits and his eventual fate. This would be a great way for Ghost of Yotei to romanticize and remember Jin's legacy, all while letting players know that it hasn't forgotten about the samurai that the Ghost franchise and the mantle of the Ghost was founded upon.
Players could also come across historical records detailing Jin's strategies, or even some recovered journal entries of his that provide them with an even deeper, more personal connection to the series' past.
Ghost of Yotei Could Incorporate Mythic Tales That Conclude Jin's Story
One of the more practical ways Ghost of Yotei could conclude Jin's story is by incorporating it into Mythic Tales, which were in the first game and are expected to return in the next. Mythic Tales were special side quests in Ghost of Tsushima that revolved around legendary samurai, supernatural abilities, or lost artifacts, making them a perfect fit for telling more of Jin's story in Ghost of Yotei. These quests were also longer and more cinematic than other side missions, which means players would potentially even see Jin himself in Ghost of Yotei's Mythic Tales if they were utilized in this way.
Ghost of Yotei may be moving forward with a new protagonist and setting, but it doesn’t have to leave Ghost of Tsushima's legacy behind, especially Jin's story. Whether through artifacts, folklore, or Mythic Tales, Ghost of Yotei can incorporate the conclusion of Jin's story into its own, even if the series chooses to return to his story at a later date in a full game. These somewhat subtle elements could ensure that Jin remains a legend within the Ghost franchise without distracting from Atsu's story in Ghost of Yotei, potentially creating a seamless bridge between it and Ghost of Tsushima.
