Ghost of Yotei is getting ready for its upcoming launch by showcasing its intense and bloody combat system, including some of the fun things players will be able to do with the massive odachi sword. Plenty of weapons have already been revealed for Ghost of Yotei, but the long reach and potential striking power of the odachi could make it one of the most valuable in players' arsenals.

Ghost Of Yotei Atsu Weapon Katana

The follow-up to Sucker Punch Productions' 2020 hit Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yotei is scheduled for release on October 2. Technically a standalone sequel, the upcoming action-adventure game will feature a new protagonist, a new region of Japan for players to explore, and several other upgrades. However, it will also include several familiar elements for fans of Ghost of Tsushima, including its fierce swordplay.

Ghost of Yotei Getting Fan-Favorite Co-Op Mode in 2026

A brand-new Ghost of Yotei trailer confirms that developer Sucker Punch will add a much-requested multiplayer co-op mode to the game next year.

Ghost of Yotei Shows off Odachi Combat

A new gameplay video has been released on the official PlayStation YouTube channel, showing how Ghost of Yotei protagonist Atsu will handle the odachi, a traditional Japanese greatsword. Riding through a field on her horse, Atsu comes across a gathering of five enemies, draws the sword from its place on her back, and knocks one of them down with a flying leap from off her mount. The ensuing fight is brief, but it shows off a lot of the weapon's capabilities, as Atsu dispatches her foes with moves like an arcing slash and a powerful overhead slice, each of which appears to one-shot an enemy. While the odachi's size and weight doesn't make it the fastest of blades, three different combos of three to four hits apiece are also on display, showcasing the weapon's versatility.

The odachi is just one of several traditional Japanese weapons players will use in Ghost of Yotei. Previous reveals have shown that Atsu will also have access to single and dual-form katana fighting styles, as well as the yari, a straight-headed spear, and the kusarigama, a short sickle with a weighted ball attached to it by a chain. In addition to those melee options, ranged weapons will include a variety of bows and early firearms that can be loaded with different types of ammunition.

Additional reveals will likely be coming as time creeps closer to the game's early October launch. Sony has already announced that Ghost of Yotei will be featured at Toyko Game Show 2025, appearing alongside Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls and Astro Bot. Japan's biggest gaming event isn't scheduled to kick off until September 25, so there is still plenty of time for Sony and Sucker Punch to share more ahead of that date.
