The creative director of the upcoming Sucker Punch action-adventure title Ghost of Yotei has shared how the development team felt after learning of Grand Theft Auto 6's delay into 2026. Unsurprisingly, the studio wasn't looking forward to competing with Rockstar's highly anticipated title, and upon learning that Ghost of Yotei would have some breathing room after all, celebrations were quickly underway.
Initially aiming for a 2025 release window, Grand Theft Auto 6 was officially delayed until 2026 in early May following countless rumors and radio silence from Rockstar Games. The game's first trailer, released in December 2023, currently boasts over 265 million views on YouTube, and analysts have predicted that the open-world title will make an eye-watering $7.6 billion in its first two months. It's no surprise that other game studios aren't looking forward to competing with GTA 6, and according to an employee at Sucker Punch, the title's delay prompted a multi-month celebration of epic proportions at the office.
Grand Theft Auto Fans Think They've Spotted a New 'Feature' in GTA 6 Trailer
Months after the release of the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailers, fans believe there's one more hidden detail that many might have missed.
Ghost of Yotei Team Had a ‘Multi-Month Hangover’ After Learning of GTA 6’s Delay
During a recent chat with MinnMax, Ghost of Yotei's creative director, Nate Fox, commented on GTA 6's highly publicized delay and the profound relief the developers felt upon hearing the news. When asked if the entire studio popped some champagne, Fox smiled. "We're all still hungover. Multi-month hangover. That was a great day," he stated. Countless game studios are currently struggling with the promise of Grand Theft Auto 6's launch, trying to plan their release schedule around the title's current release date of May 26, 2026. In the meantime, Sucker Punch doesn't have to cope with the stress of it anymore, with Ghost of Yotei scheduled to release on October 2.
While many studios breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing of the delay, GTA 6's new release date is causing its own share of problems. Several major titles are slated to release sometime in 2026, including The Duskbloods, Saros, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Pragmata, and Fable. Timing will be everything for these games, as any title released in the same window as Grand Theft Auto 6 may be doomed to fight an uphill battle.
In less than a month, players will finally be able to join Atsu on her grand adventure across Japan, with Ghost of Yotei available to pre-load on PS5 starting September 25. The game will come in at around 85GB, though early updates may add to this already substantial size. More details about the title may be revealed later this month, as Sony will have a major presence at Tokyo Game Show 2025.
