Ghost Recon Frontline was recently announced to a very mixed reception, as a free-to-play multiplayer shooter may not have been exactly what fans were hoping for from the next Ghost Recon game. Frontline represents a new direction for the series, and while not all are particularly thrilled, it does look as though it could still be a blast to play.
In particular, the flagship game mode of Ghost Recon Frontline, Expedition, looks as though it could be of great interest to the right player. On the surface, Expedition may appear like any other battle royale game mode, but there’s a lot more to it than that. For fans willing to approach Ghost Recon Frontline with an open mind, Ghost Recon Frontline’s Expedition mode could produce hours of fun.
What is Ghost Recon Frontline?
The recently revealed Ghost Recon Frontline hasn’t received the warmest of receptions from Ghost Recon fans. While many were eagerly anticipating the next entry in the Ghost Recon franchise, most were hoping the series would return to its roots with a more old school style of gameplay. However, Frontline is far from the classic style of a Ghost Recon game, instead taking the series further into unexplored depths. Ghost Recon Frontline is closer to a battle royale game, but with a major difference. This is unfamiliar territory for Ghost Recon, and as such, many players are not all too happy with the announcement.
For players who are dissatisfied with the seemingly new direction of the Ghost Recon franchise, however, Frontline may still be worth checking out. Ghost Recon Frontline is a free to play game, which may give Frontline an advantage over older Ghost Recon games. Ghost Recon Frontline may also be warmly received by fans of Ghost Recon Phantoms, a previous PvP entry into the Ghost Recon series. That game had a dedicated fanbase of its own, but ultimately it struggled and its servers were shut down in 2016. Despite the negative reaction from some, others will be hoping for a different outcome in the case of Ghost Recon Frontline. Fans will also be eager to try out Frontline’s new Expedition game mode to see if Ghost Recon’s return to PvP has been worth the wait.
What is Ghost Recon Frontline’s Expedition Mode?
Ghost Recon Frontline has two primary game modes to keep fans entertained. The first of which is a nine vs nine domination mode called Control, which will have a familiar premise to most fans of multiplayer shooters. But the main mode that will be of interest to fans is Frontline’s new Expedition mode. This is Frontline’s large scale battle royale-type mode that has provoked equal parts interest and ire in the Ghost Recon fanbase. While some fans are disappointed to see the Ghost Recon franchise produce its own battle royale mode and follow in the footsteps of the likes of Call of Duty Warzone, and Battlefield 5: Firestorm, others have noted that Ghost Recon Frontline’s Expedition mode looks like a unique take on the genre.
In Frontline’s Expeditions mode, players are thrust into a 102 player lobby made up of 34 teams of three. The mode is set on Drakemoor island, which has recently seen an environmental disaster. On first impressions, this sounds like a fairly standard battle royale mode. However, unlike other battle royale modes where the combat circle is steadily closing on the centre of the map, there is no such circle in Expedition. Instead, players will be tasked with collecting three pieces of intel before fleeing the island by calling in an extraction helicopter. This will of course alert enemies to the player’s location, and the goal will then be to stave off the onslaught of enemy players and escape Drakemoor with all the intel. Frontline’s battle royale mode stands out among others that are available, so it may yet stand a fighting chance.
Ghost Recon Frontline is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
